Great music born out of tragedy

The Joy Division song Love Will Tear Us Apart was released a month after the suicide of their lead singer Ian Curtis, and thanks to the increased attention that Curtis's death brought, the song would become the band's first and only major hit, and enter popular consciousness forever after.

Joy Division would disband not long after and members of the band would form New Order, becoming one of the most successful electronic rock groups of all time and releasing one of the most influential synth pop songs ever, Blue Monday.

Any other examples?

Sitting at the Dock of the Bay went to number 1 shortly after the death of Otis Redding. It's doubtful it would have achieved as much success without his death.

Beethovan was deaf by the time he wrote Ode To Joy, if that counts.

Watching the movie The Wall gives the context of this song. It's sad shit, yo.
