I have, and I frequently do. But I'd do it again despite that, because it was unfortunately necessary since it wasn't just self-defense; it was also in defense of a child.

No, I wouldn’t feel any remorse for the person if they put me in a position where the chances of my survival were compromised. I would just say “good riddance” if the person attempted to murder me.
