When my youngest started to doubt, I said he was wrong - Santa is real. On Christmas Eve night, I spilled a bunch of ash out of the fireplace and walked through it and around the tree in snow boots, leaving bootprints all over. Then I left a Santa note to him (written by someone else) thanking him for the cookies and answering the question he asked in his letter to Santa.
It worked for another year.

That's how it happened with me as well. It's not like someone told me at school or elsewhere.
That being said, I don't think there was any great period where I thought he was actually real.
I remember thinking that all kids just knew he wasn't real, so when I was 7 or so, my cousin and I were watching TV and I mentioned how Santa isn't real, and he jumped up, screaming and crying, running to his mother that I told him Santa isn't real. My mother gave me a walloping for opening up my mouth.

See, in my house, Santa didn't wrap the gifts he left. He delivered them ready to go. The wrapped ones were from us and under the tree in advance

Ahhhh. We wrap all of them but some of them say from Santa and some say from mommy and daddy and we put them out Christmas eve night.

I would tell him the truth. If you keep saying Santa is real and he believes you and insists to everyone else that Santa is real, and then you eventually tell him the truth, he'll be like, "YOU LIED TO ME!! I TRUSTED YOU!! NOW I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE!"
