Books : What are you reading this summer?

What are you reading this summer?

I have just emerged from language training and I am looking for English-language things to read!

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I have read a couple of those.

On Writing - Stephen King and This One Will Hurt You - Paul Crenshaw

Good choices!

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Have you read This We'll Defend by Paul Crenshaw? That's in my next group. I want to see how similar and different his experiences were from mine.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

no. I'm afraid that I haven't heard of that.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

It's about his time in the Army. I'm curious to see what he has to say considering how he leans politically.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

This sounds interesting!
I also had to check him out too.
I'm interested in his experiences. I wouldn't mind reading more of what he has written.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Am liking that Sea Wolves option.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

So far I enjoy it.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I'd like to read Revenge, by Tom Bower. It's been preordered, but it seems to be taking time to reach the States. Meanwhile everyone else in the world seems to be devouring it.

What sort of books are you interested in?

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Nothing yet. Waiting til I'm living close to the library again to pick up The Talismana and a Vonneguy book. Not sure which. Last book I read was The Final Dossier, a Twin Peaks book by Mark Frost.

Currently reading Dark Age America by John Michael Greer. It's a sobering read about how climate change and other environmental factors will play a leading role in the collapse of our civilization.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Will or could? I am hoping that we can still avoid the worst of it.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

The author is pessimistic about that and believes it's pretty much a done deal and irreversible at this point.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Interesting cat, the author, I just read up on him.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Some film boards thread about a guy riding on a bus with a girl.

I’ll let you know how it goes, or die trying.

Strange dude. Penny-pincher, anxious person, if I recall.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Yeah, kind of a dick. He did have a unique upbringing even for those times. I try to read one learning book a summer and one enjoyment book.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Just started Bob Dylan's autobiography. It's great. He's a great and evocative writer (unsurprisingly).

Re: What are you reading this summer?

The Civil War trilogy Army of the Potomac by Bruce Catton, includes Mr Lincoln's Army, Glory Road and A Stillness at Appomattox

Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi

Treasure of Matecumbe (aka A Journey to Matecumbe) by Robert Lewis Taylor

Zodiac by Robert Graysmith

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

The Bull From the Sea by Mary Renault

The Sign of the Four by Arthur Conan Doyle

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I have finished Mr Lincoln's Army, an excellent book, and plan to read Glory Road within the next month. Catton was an incredible writer, I plan on reading all of his Civil War books eventually.

I read the SF book City by Clifford Simak, which is a collection of connected short stories sweeping in scope, taking place over thousands of years on Earth with some very interesting ideas, where dogs and AI figure prominently. After reading this, I am looking to read more of his works.

And I am about a fourth of the way through Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I have read Catton's trilogy on the Army of the Potomac in the past, and they are excellent. I recently came upon copies of the 3, and am going to read them again. Being old books, despite being classics, the local public library doesn't carry them on the shelves any more. (Although one can read them online through the library - but I like to get away from my computer, and reading a real book is so much better.)

Catton's trilogy on the whole Civil War is pretty good also. ( The Coming Fury, Terrible Swift Sword, Never Call Retreat). Catton spends a good part of "The Coming Fury" describing the political events leading up to the Civil War.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I loved the first book, culminating with his vivid description at Antietam. I bought the Library of America edition, which includes all three books with lots of maps I have found to be invaluable.

I was hoping there would be something similar for his other works. They are not so easily acquired. I may have to go the Kindle route and not usually a fan of that, either.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

After I finish my current book, Ivanhoe , I plan on reading Bruce Catton's trilogy on the Army of the Potomac. I have read them before, several years ago and they are pretty outstanding. They go through the problems and then eventual success of the Union army fighting in the east during the Civil War.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Audiobook of Eyes of the Dragon.

It's a completely different experience listening to someone reading it vs you reading it silently.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

I have never been able to get into audiobooks but I am curious about that novel.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

It's like a fairy tale.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Finished the outstanding Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. My first of his novels. I will likely read Bleak House or David Copperfield next.

But I just started a novel I have been wanting to read for some time, Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson. I would say he is best known as a SF writer, and I've read a few of those, but my favorite work of his is The Broken Sword, a fantasy novel, which was a complete shock as I had no idea he was capable of writing so well and with such imagination.

Re: What are you reading this summer?

Great Expectations is probably the only "classic" that I enjoy.

The Lion does not give a fuck. Bring. More. Sheep.
