If you're talking about circumcision, I hope they address that. I don't know when it became the norm, but I've only been with one guy who hadn't been circumcised, and he was born in Germany.

There is nothing wrong with what you said. Nothing. Gallinger could easily find out he had Jewish roots. Or black roots, for that matter. But the idea that Judaism is only a religion is insulting and ridiculous and I hope you didn't mind the stupid response that talked about it's being just a belief.

Hitler killed many people who were raised Christian by Christian parents whose grandparents had converted from Christianity. It didn't matter. They were still Jewish in the eyes of the Nazis and the eyes of the world. Why deny that? It's real.

You can find Jews of any race. Judaism is a belief. But the fact is, it's also a real group of people with their own languages and their own genetic quirks, including genetic diseases like Tay Sachs.

And there is nothing wrong with saying that.

I would LOVE it if Gallinger found out he was Jewish! But I don't think he is. I think Bertie is (what a mensch he is!) and I have thought that from the start.

You're right that the traditional Jewish religion is called Judaism, but not all Jews are Judaists. Jewishness is an ethnicity, not a religion. While all converts to Judaism are also considered Jews (they essentially become honorary ethnic Jews), many Jews by birth are either non-religious or have converted to other religions. It may sound like a contradiction, but there are Jewish Buddhists and even Jewish Christians. The Jewish people consider everyone a Jew who was born to a Jewish mother, regardless if they're Judaists or not.

Oh, please. PLEASE. Nazis killed plenty of people for being Jewish who were raised Christian, whose parents and grandparents had converted to Christianity. It didn't matter. They were still Jews, not just in the eyes of the Nazis, but in the eyes of the world.

You can deny that all you like, but it doesn't change the truth.

If Gallinger stays in Germany and thirty years on it's discovered he has Jewish roots, he'd be in the camps with all the "defectives" and "mongrels" and "inferiors" he doubtless would have sterilized.

If you're hoping that he finds out he has Jewish ancestors that shouldn't trouble him one bit. At least not if the show handles it realistically.

When someone has a strong opinion on a divisive topic such as religion, they aren't going to be easily persuaded to join the other side. Especially with something like finding out where their ancestors stood on the subject. Usually NOTHING will change an adult's mind on matters such as these. It is extremely rare.

A racist isn't going to all of the sudden see the light just because their parents weren't racist.

Many atheists have religious parents.

Gallinger is a very confident and successful adult. Do you really expect him to have a crisis of conscience if he learns his ancestors were Jewish? He will simply rationalize it away.

Just like people who are anti-immigration. The fact that their ancestors were immigrants doesn't instantly change their mind on the subject.

Yes, he's very confident. Does he have his share of insecurities? Absolutely.

A person can simultaneously have confidence in certain aspects of their life, and insecurities in others.

He's not threatened by Algernon because he truly thinks Algernon is better than him, he is threatened by Algernon out of jealousy and racism.

He's made up his mind about Eugenics - if the show were to allow the identity of his ancestors to rattle his stance on Eugenics, then it is greatly oversimplifying the situation.

Uh, what? If he didn't think that Algernon was better than he is he would have no reason to be so jealous. The fact that a black man is BETTER than he is just drives him up a wall. He is absolutely jealous.

Omg. Ask yourself this WHY does he sabotage Algernon's surgery? Because he is jealous. He KNOWS Algernon is better. He KNOWS he can't wait around for Algernon to make a mistake because it is not going to happen. Sure, maybe he is confident that he can sabotage the surgery, but he does so because Gallinger has NO CONFIDENCE in himself. He has NO CONFIDENCE that he will ever be as good as Algernon.

If he TRULY believes in eugenics, and I think he does it would rattle him A LOT to discover he was a member of one of those "inferior" races. If he believes that he is a member of the master race, it would shake him to his core to find out that he is not, to find out that he is actually from a race he despises.

This has happened before, you know.

Gallinger thinks Jews are inferior. Defective. He thinks he belongs to the superior Nordic race. It would trouble him a lot to discover he was Jewish. What if he discovered he was black, as least how it was defined then? I have seen mixed people look just as Aryan as Gallinger. Are you telling me that wouldn't mess him up? It would.

I personally was disappointed that Algie didn't suggest to Gallinger point-blank that he apply his "proven" eugenicist beliefs to his mentally ill wife!

Edit: forgot to add, that scene outside of the courtroom"white intelligence vs. black violence" was really sickening and I wish the writers had made Algie a bit better than to resort to raising his fists. He was just feeding into Gallinger's theories even more.

His wife just didn't decide to get up and go crazy unprovoked, it was PTSD induced by the loss of their child. Many women go crazy over the loss of a child.

The only case for Eugenics here would bewas his wife "preprogrammed" to respond the way she did after losing their son? I doubt science knowsyet.

Maybe so, but Algie is a decent man who plays fair and doesn't drag others into his personal conflicts.

Algie wasn't feeding into Gallinger's theories. Algernon was acting in a completely understandable way. Absolutely. And Gallinger set him up. He got him angry then got him to back down then sucker-punched Algernon in his bad eye on purpose to blind him. And Gallinger thinks he is morally superior? Smarter? He thinks like a psychopath.

He'd just deny it.

well if his character does live enough to see world war 2 and finds out that eugenics starts coming out of favor and also see the horror's of war, the one thing on my mind would be that someone would either kill him or he kill's himself
