The Shining : Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

Does anyone else feel bad for Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) getting killed?

And I don't mean just getting murdered.
I mean getting murdered three seconds after he arrives and goes inside the hotel.
There he was away from it all and having himself a nice break or vacay.
Then he spends the money on a plane ticket and has to drive for hours through snow, ice and a freezing outdoors only to go back and get the ax.
The poor guy wasted all that time and money for nothing.
Anyone else see it that way for poor old Hal?

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

SPOILER: He didn't die in the book.

Another reason why I hate Kubrick's "adaptation".

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

Well, I am talking about the movie and not the book.

Since you did bring it up though…
Did he even get at least wounded by the ax in the book?

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

Dick is wounded by Jack, but survives.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

I like the changes Kubrick made. I'm sure he threw a lot of King fans for a loop by killing off Hallorann.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

I have nothing against changing something in a book for a movie; however, Kubrick's adaptation was dull, the characters one dimensional, and it played comically.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

He survives in the novel. I don't know why Kubrick had him killed off like that - and so damn quickly.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

Yeah it was a pretty bad characterization. His character wasn't there to help Danny. He exists only to explain how the haunted house works for the audience. It would have been more useful has Hallorann explained The Shinning to Wendy.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

His soul helped save Danny in some way. I'm sure of it.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

He did bring the snowcat which they drove away in.
But still, he should have survived or done more than that after going to all the trouble and time to get there.

Agreed. He saved both Wendy and her son.

I first saw this during the day on TV at grandma's when I was about 5 or 6 years old and the way Jack swung that axe into this old man traumatized me.

Besides bringing them the Snowcat, how else?
Been awhile since I watched.

Did you find anything else traumatizing?
Like the blood flooding the hallway, the twins or the dead bodies?

I didn't see that at the time. Can't remember what I thought when I saw it as a teenager. I like how it made Rose The Hat smile compared to the horror on Wendy's face when she saw the river of blood. This scene and Jack carrying the ax in the snow are my 2 earliest memories. I initially thought was was flying on that ax like a witch on a broom when he went limping after Danny in the snow.

Same here!!! That scene is burned into my mind to this day. I wanted to scream like Danny did.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

Yes. It was a dumb thing to do and I'm one of the few who thinks the TV miniseries did The Shining better.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

Add me. I liked the TV miniseries so much better.

Yeah, I definitely felt bad for him.

Re: Anyone else feel this way about Hallorann?

I did feel sorry for him. And he died in such a brutal way.
