Cult Films : Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I love Shoot 'Em Up. Love it. But it seems like no one else thinks much of it.

I also thought The Counsellor was outstanding.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One Else Did

Manhunter

...I liked it. If you're talking about the first Hannibal Lecter movie.

"I have always valued my lifelessness."

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I enjoyed I Know Who Killed Me.

I also liked Passion of the Christ. I know a lot of people did too, but I have never personally met one...

Stink, stink, stink, Mr Murdock!

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Halloween 3 and Exorcist 2 get alot of hate, but i think that those films are actually good.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Halloween III is starting to get the respect it deserves. Probably the best sequel in the series for precisely the reason the dummy masses hate it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Final Exam (1981) is a slasher movie that seems to get bashed by 50% and gets lauded by the other 50%. Count me in the latter group!

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Final Exam... Wow. I don't like it, but I know it has its fans. Of all the slashers of 81 (the last great year for that genre), Final Exam, Graduation Day, and The Burning represent the very worst. Then again, the genre itself is so looked down on, who's to say which ones are good and which ones aren't?

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

how could the be the last great year of that genre when the genre just started 3 years before it? you're wrong bc there were so many great slasher films after '81 in fact there's more after '81 than before and in '81.

we had some of the best slasher films of the friday the 13th films: part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6 and part 7. we also had halloween part 3, 4 and 5 after 1981, we had all the a nightmare on elm street films, so many classics were made after '81 that you have a very small knowledge of slasher films to think this.

Southland Tales

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I too love this movie. Maybe it's because I'm a huge Philip K. Dick fan and the references to PKD are endless. I've never read anything regarding it being an official homage to his work, but I don't see how it couldn't be. However, I can see how if you're not familiar with his stories it would seem pointless and meandering. The humor, paranoia, and complexity of the story all together definitely brings it closer to his work than any official adaptation ever has.

What have you used since computers were invented?

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I'm not gonna research these to see how many people or critics actually hated them, but everyone I know thinks these are unwatchable:

Patrick
Shakes the Clown
Mystery Men
Dark City
12 Monkeys
Best Defense
Spies Like Us
Deal of the Century
Who Killed the Electric Car?
The Couch Trip
Sneakers
Loose Cannons
Doctor Detroit
Rendition
Nothing But Trouble
Nothing But the Truth
Exit to Eden
Ice Pirates
Hudson Hawk
The Escape Artist
Excess Baggage
Jackie Chan's First Strike
Why We Fight

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Gigli.

I never understood the mockery and derision. It was no Oscar winner (but then, I can't remember the last time I liked and was entertained by an Oscar winner), but it was cute and fun.

Of course, I didn't see it until about five years after its release, so I went in fully expecting The Worst Movie Ever - so maybe simply not being The Worst made it seem okay?

Re: Films You Loved That No-One Else Did

Howard the Duck
Clash of the Titans (the first one)
George Pal's War of the Worlds
Phantasm
Rock & Rule

Re: Films You Loved That No-One Else Did

Octaman - obviously very bad but somehow awesome at the same time. I don't know how this isn't a cult classic.

Year One - Uhhh... why do people hate this movie? it's actually pretty funny.

Earth Girls Are Easy - Unbelievable how low the score is for this on IMdB.

Jumpin Jack Flash - This movie is like classic 80s Woopie. She is quite cool in this movie, it's got 80s computer hacking, and various sites and sounds of 80s new york. It's a real classic in my opinion.

Desperately Seeking Susan - Another 80s classic that is unfairly maligned on IMdB.

Dracula AD 1972 - one of the best Hammer Dracula films.

Barbarella - kind of well known cult classic but still has an incredibly low rating on IMdB.

Margot at the Wedding
Greenberg - amazing that both of these got such low ratings.

The Future - this movie was actually really inventive and cool. It's not a happy movie but still great if you like Miranda July and creative narrative techniques.

Mars Attacks - this movie is a complete classic it's criminal how low it's score is on here.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One Else Did

fuck imdb and fuck rotten tomatoes who actually only has martyrs at 56% or something barbarella is one of the best films ever made.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Exorcist II: The Heretic - Richard Burton, James Earl Jones, Louise Fletcher, Max von Sydow, and John Boorman, what's not to like? Well, plenty, actually, but I can forgive a lot if I really like the actors.

Halloween III
- I was disappointed that it bombed so badly that it derailed the original idea of having the Halloween franchise be an anthology series instead of all about Michael Myers.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - my second favorite Indy movie, and people look at me like I'm crazy when I say that. First of all, I'm way too young to have any direct contact with the old serials that Raiders made fun of, so I don't really get the joke, and I generally don't like movies-about-other-movies that all those film-school graduates were putting out in the '70s. Crystal Skull spoofs the '50 sci-fi and Cold War movies that I am familiar with, and I like Shia LeBeouf more than most people seem to. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is my first favorite in the franchise, btw, largely because of Sean Connery.

Speaking of Connery (and John Boorman): Zardoz. Everyone makes fun of this one, and for good reason, but I can really get into it. I know some people running for president right now who wouldn't have a problem with using "the gun is good, the penis is evil" as their campaign slogan.

The Medallion - A Jackie Chan movie that nobody seems to like but me.

There are tons of lesser movie I enjoy whenever I get a chance to see them, many of which are definitely "cult films", and therefore by definition have a fanbase: Barbarella, Equinox (1970), The Brain That Wouldn't Die (and the similarly-themed The Frozen Dead), come quickly to mind, as well as almost every Japanese kaiju movie ever made.

BRAZIL.
I loved and still LOVE Brazil, but when I saw it, many people I spoke with were "huh" about it.
I don't care because whenever BRAZIL in on television, I HAVE to watch it!
My favorite scenes were the scenes of the Mother getting plastic surgeries. LOL!
Also, the music, the "film noir" look to it, all the actors, I could go on and on!
Loved it~!

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

you're wrong about this movie no this movie has a great cult following. it's very well known and very loved by a lot of people. now if this was 1985 when it came out then yes you could say not a lot of people loved it maybe, but it's not and over the last at least 20 years this movie has gained a cult following.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One Else Did

(edwardcooke-615-74830 ...WOW, I'd forgotten about CLOUD ATLAS...That movie was "different", for sure. Many people hated it, but I found it "interesting" and watched it all the way through ).

Anyhow, I always really liked "Eyes Wide Shut", but most people that I talked to did not like it.
(ps: I've actually seen it several times).

Re: Films You Loved That No-One Else Did

EWS is like most of Kubrick's films... Lukewarm to negative reviews upon release and then 15 or so years later, the general attitude becomes much more positive. I remember being the only person to like it when I first saw, but I've come across a lot of people in the past few years who really seem to enjoy it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Sutre. I don't know why-I just found it fascinating

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I've just remembered: Ghosts of the Civil Dead, Suture, Hardware... The others that I like have 'cult' followings, so don't really count (Event Horizon, Hellraiser: Inferno and Exorcist3)

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Get him to the Greek - I wake up to it and I brush my teeth to it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Moneybone.. Imaginative and visually stunning, the director is like the offspring of Tim Burton

Blades of glory.. All time favourit, I can quote it from the beginning until the end

The mortal instruments: city of bones.. It's bad yes, but it's also fun so I did like it

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Run Lola Run - written and directed by To
Tykwer. When I heard he was filming one of my fav books I was really excited - Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell - now one of my all-time fav films and another one that no-one has heard of! ;)

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I LOVED the movie Brazil...but nobody else really "got it" that I spoke with.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

These have fans too, but generally get **** talked:

Mortal Kombat duology

Super Mario Bros.

Iron Man 2

X-Men: The Last Stand

Superman IV

XMO: Wolverine

TASM2

G.I. Joe: The Movie (1987)

Jaws 3

Return of the Jedi

The Ewok Adventures

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Most Christian Slater

Howard the Duck

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

starship troopers now this is a really good movie so i can't understand why it's bashed halloween 3 is a great film but for some weird reason it go really bad reviews.

love i how you said most christian slater due got eh worst reputation for his movies in the late '80s and '90s but he made so many great films in the late '80s and early '90s. my gosh, pump up the volume is one of the best films ever made and so is kuffs.

the movie that ended his career and started his not making good movies for a long time period was very bad things in 1998.

now return of the jedi is a very weird case here bc i've heard both great praise, classic film praise but also i've heard this is a stupid children's movie and this not anywhere near the classic status and greatness of the first 2 films. so who is right here?

what is tasm2?

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Eyes Wide Shut.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Guyver Dark Hero.
Not sure why I like maybe because I watched this movie as a kid and at the time loved the Guyver Manga/Anime.
It's a terrible movie but I still enjoy watching it a least once every two years since it was released.
Not sure if it can really be considered a cult film it does generate a bit of interest on IMDB and Metal Gear Solid fans due to David Hayter and it's one of those films you either love or hate.
http://davidhayterfans.tumblr.com/ LOL.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I thought cloud atlas was a mainstream movie, meaning that the mainstream liked it, right, so how could it be considered unappreciated?

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

John Carter: I don't want to get into any arguments about the source material, but the film itself I thought was a pretty good summer popcorn flick. At least, no worse than 99% of the summer adventure movies out there. "Love" is maybe too strong a word, but I enjoyed it and was surprised that it flopped.

The Trouble With Angels: A Catholic-themed movie starring Hayley Mills. I adore this film, and I don't understand why it's not a perennial Christmas classic. Hardly anyone I know has heard of it.

Starship Troopers: I can't explain why I love this movie so much. Whenever it comes on TV, I settle down and watch the whole thing. I'm sure I've seen it dozens of times by now, I find it totally entertaining.

This Property is Condemned: A really good movie - with Natalie Wood at her most beautiful to boot. There seems to be no love for this film, and it hardly ever airs.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1978)

It was the first to try to mesh Beatles' songs into a cogent story line. "Across the Universe" was much more successful at this, though not completely successful.

When I firt saw "Sgt. Pepper's..." I thought it was like, one of the best films ever, and would sweep the Oscars. It featured the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton as the faux Beatles.

Over the years it's been recognized as a huge creative and financial flop. I can still watch it and get nostalgic about my original feelings, but I see it now as a very cheesy and amatuerishly made movie.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

well i liked cabin boy a little and everyone hated it, it wasn't that bad. ishtar isn't anywhere near as bad as it's reputation which is fake and false. it's actually; pretty good.

The Music of Chance.

Two would-be card sharks, played by James Spader and Mandy Patinkin, are inexplicably forced to build a stone wall when they lose a card game to two rich dudes. An existential mindfuck.
