Cult Films : Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I have tonnes of films that I really enjoyed yet critics and general people alike absolutely hated. Wondering where everyone else stands with this.

Of these films, I have to favour "Cloud Atlas" because I love it to bits and can't stop watching it!

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I've never heard of 'cloud atlas', but here are some of my choices

'the horror of party beach'
'jaws 3-d'
'cruising'

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Wow, another person who likes Horror of Party Beach! I find it very entertaining and not dull at all!

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

So many despised films that I have enjoyed\loved and I would usually despise something that the herd flock too in droves:

TO WONG FOO THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, JULIE NEWMAR-95', (I think the title is the main problem with this one, although the others I saw it with, looked over at me when it was finished and contemptuously exclaimed."What was that?" They loved "Priscilla" however, which I don't really like.

HOWARD THE DUCK-86', Silly premise and story, that I find works quite well and is also a sweet friendship\love story. It is also full of 80's charm, magic and terrific borderline cheesy optical effects.

1941-79', Spielberg's so called turkey, is over the top, riotous and zany; but is still very entertaining, funny and terrific to look at. Only really bombed in the US.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Hey Rascal, that's funny that you brought this up. I love, love "To Wong Foo, Thanks for everything, Julie Newmar". It is very funny, I ADORE the the main characters. It couldn't take itself less seriously, and there is a message in there to boot. Patrick Swayze realy surprised me with his all-out sportsmanship and he made for a dignified, lovely drag queen with a heart of gold. Some of my friends think it's too silly, but I think therein lies much of its charm. The movie doesn't try to be more than what it is, and what it is warm, genuinely funny and likeable.

"Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", on the other hand, suffered from too much ambition. The costumes were original, certainly, and vivid. And there were times when it seemed like it was going to be funny, but ultimately it took itself too seriously and I didn't care about any of the characters, with the exception of Terrence Stamp. My favorite part was either when the prissy muscle boy got drunk and tried to make a pass at some of the locals, ending badly. And I liked the end when they played ABBA's "Mamma Mia", but that's really only because I love ABBA. Lets put it this way: I own "To Wong Foo , Julie Newmar. Thanks for everything " and I don't own "Priscilla " My friends think I've got it all backward, but I couldn't care less.

Hey Mr H,

Await for pm.

I agree with and understand everything you have commented on about TO WONG FOO vs PRISCILLA. I don't know what it is about the film; but I had to go back the next day to see it again in 95'. Even a female friend I ran into on the street asked if I had seen it and then we both said at the same time"It was better than PRISCILLA". She said if there had been another session straight after, she and her mother would have gone right back in. It was all about just being fabulous and while a bit silly, it had a nice message that was simply told and a huge heart. Something I think PRISCILLA lacked. All 3 leads were interesting and fun to watch and Swayze did make a beautiful woman. Snipes was so over the top and campy, that you could tell he was just having a great time with it and Leguizamo, stole the show as Miss Chi-Chi Rodriguez. ".you two are just too beautiful". He deserved an Oscar nod as far as I am concerned.

PRISCILLA's characters were grating and annoying for the most part and really not that likeable and it was crude also. Not that I mind crude humor; but it appeared like it only wanted to shock and get laughs out of dirty jokes and I don't really think it did the gay community any real favors. One could get the impression, that being gay, is about wanting to be in drag. I didn't get this from TO WONG FOO. It knew that "some" gay guys, had far too much dress sense for one gender and they just had to be fabulous. PRISCILLA was like, lets laugh AT the drag queens, instead of laugh WITH them and their humanity. Stamp was an asset though, like you have mentioned and is the main reason for me to watch it. I don't own either; but I am waiting for TOO WONG to be released on blu ray. I won't be bothering with PRISCILLA.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I liked the end when they played ABBA's "Mamma Mia", but that's really only because I love ABBA.
____________
Have you seen MURIEL'S WEDDING-94' Mr. H? If you love ABBAsorry, don't know how to make a backwards Byou would enjoy this. I have seen it a trillion times over and never get sick of it. Interesting that it came out the same year as PRISCILLA and both are now considered little Aussie classics. MW, has a terrificness about it, that I think PRISCILLA lacks.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Hey Rascal, yeah I really like Muriel's Wedding. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and I've always been drawn towards movies which contain both elements of comedy and drama /tragedy. I felt so bad for the mother. I can sort of relate to her (not to sound overly pathetic mind you). And I loved the relationship between Muriel and her best friend (played by Rachel Griffith, who is wonderful. Can't remember the character's name off the top of my head. ) I love the bit where she says to the snotty girls, "I'd rather eat nails than drink with you. By the way, your friend us *beep* Chalk!" What a great segue to ABBA'S "Waterloo"! Perfect timing.

I was so happy that Muriel finally woke up to herself by the end of the movie. Best friends!!! I can only hope that she reconnected with that super adorable boy she met at the shop. I never found the swimming champ to be cute in the slightest.

As I recall, MW and Priscilla were pretty much released back to back here in the States.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

showgirls and johnny suede. though in the case of johnny suede, no one knows about it, so it's not like people know about it and dont' like it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Running Time starring Bruce Campbell. A small B&W art film, but it kicked ass and is the only "contiguous shot" film that equals Hitchcock's "Rope" in my mind.

- I have a giant soap box and I intend to smash you with it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Hell, practically everything I've seen! Well, not that much! biggrin.gif

Favorite cult film would probably be Re-Animator.

A few more would be

Event Horizon

Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (the guy who plays the Reaper, William Sadler, lives in my area, met him once, VERY cool dude!)

Deepstar Six

Leviathan

Hudson Hawk

Demon Knight

Red Dawn (the original, the remake really SUCKED)

Stealth

ARRET! C'est ici l'empire de la mort!

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Hudson Hawk, yeah! Couldn't agree with you more about Red Dawn.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Hudson Hawk! I've never told my husband that Hudson Hawk even exists, because if he didn't like it, I couldn't stay with him.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

one of the biggest mysteries in the world is why most people hate Hudson hawk. it has this history, legend, and reputation as one of the worst movies ever made but it's far from it, it's actually one of the better films of it's time period.

yeah, it's a fun and entertaining film. another film that's always gotten a horrible name and a horrible and unfounded reputation is showgirls. it's one of the best films ever made. try finding a more exciting and energetic and electric and powerful and powerfully entertaining and epic film.

also, bad biology and ms. 45 are great films and bad biology is from the same director of frankenhooker.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Dark Water (2005) is such film for me. I think I'm the only one who loved it. General audiences hated and critics weren't much kinder as they didn't feel it lived up to the scariness of "The Ring" and found it boring. I found the performances to be fantastic, I found it atmospheric and kept me glued the screen, visually it's great and loved the soundtrack and direction. The script could've been stronger but I still found it perfectly acceptable. Very underrated in my opinion.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

A lot of people like Dark Water and it received a couple of awards.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Bloody loved 'The Mist' - felt like watching a modern B movie.proper twisted!!! Also have a soft spot for an 80s film called 'Made in Heaven'.again an excellent and somewhat under rated filmthe film 'The Happening' I thought was a cool B movie feel filmreminded me of those old genre films when there's only one person left on the earth.

Oh yeah baby!!!!

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I never thought of the Mist as a B-movie style flick, but I can dig it. I never saw why people hated it. The ending is brilliant.

I loved the Langoliers, but everybody I've spoken to just calls it a piece of *beep*

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I liked The Langoliers, too. I think about it often, even though it has been many years since I've seen it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Lucky Stiff (1988). Basically everyone hated it. I love it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Sleeping Beauty
Some people liked it, but not many.
http://www.imdb.com/board/11588398/?ref_=sr_1

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Sleeping Beauty failed to use its erotic potential in an erotic way. It was like a mundane examination of catering to middle aged fears whereas Eyes Wide Shut and Lolita were genuinely touching. Emily Browning was better in Sucker Punch, even on a sexual level.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

The point of the movie is that it is stale. It isn't suppose to be erotic. It is very misunderstood, as is Browning's great performance.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Yes by failed I do intend to mean that the film failed to be what I wanted it to be. But a film about sexual, emotional, financial staleness, where the clients and even the venue are elderly, is still stale. This is no Eyes Wide Shut. It feels like audiences were a little cheated in prepublicity in to thinking it would be erotic rather than anti erotic.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One Else Did

Ah. Well at the moment I dont intend on buying any film books. I find IMDb fine for casual discussion although it's not my only resource.

I have been after a good film guide in e-book form if anyone knows where I might get one of those.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

It's funny that you bring up EWS and Lolita as I thought Sleeping Beauty was the closest that any modern director has come to Kubrick. I agree that SB had some flaws, but overall, I thought it was a successful movie.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

I think Showgirls is a good movie and I am probably alone with this thinking. I also liked Day Watch and Night Watch, even though they are a mess. Sucker Punch was good but most people complain that it was all eye-candy with no substance which I disagree. And Last Action Hero flopped afaik and I still wonder why. Maybe because it makes fun of the ridiculousness of action movies and thus of the typcial guy that likes Arnold's other movies. The same is probably true for Idiocracy, I guess many people just don't like it because deep down they realize they are halfway through transforming into one of those idiots themselves.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

yes, exactly showgirls is one of the best films ever made. try finding a film with more or as much energy, excitement, (not in just the fact that the babes are so hot and are nude, but excitement in the overall filmic energy it gives the viewer), kinetic visual splendor and excitement, full aural and visual entertainment value and quality, power, or palpable impact. watching it is like being there in vegas and experiencing everything that all the characters experience in real time.

it's such a head trip and is such a vibrant looking and feeling film. it's full of energy and life. and everything no matter how small feels so important and life altering and affecting. it's a film experience like no other and afterwards you are forever changed and you cant' ever forget watching it. all those things in that last sentence make it qualified as one of the best films ever made. you know what I mean?

Monkeybone

Looking at Wikipedia's list of Box Office Bombs, I liked:
John Carter
Mars Needs Moms
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Around the World in 80 Days
Land of the Lost
Dudley Do-Right

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

Marie and Bruce wit Julianne Moore and Matthew Broderick is one of those I really love that isn't praised much. Actually it seems this film has flown under all radars as anyone has hardly heard of it. And based on ratings on imdb and Rottentomatoes it's not much appriciated by those who have seen it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

"All About Evil" and "Deadgirl" come to mind. "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" seems to have a lot of other fans besides me, but it has even more detractors. I also strangely enjoyed the British "St. Trinian" reboot.

There are also a lot of films that I don't really claim are GOOD, but I find to be interesting. Someone mentioned "Sleeping Beauty". That is definitely a flawed film, but there are things I really liked about it (besides Emily Browning full-frontal nude scenes, of course)

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

From what others have posted, I love Showgirls, saw it 3 times at the movies.also Cruising is awesome.but, my all time fave movies I love that I cope so much sh*t for is Grease 2 and Elvira Mistress of the Darkto this day, I still watch both at least. Once a monthand proud of it,!!

I don't think everyone that watched cloud Atlas hated it. I just felt as tough it was a very hit or miss movie. Personally I loved the film but depending on the person you are going to love it or hate it. As far as guilty pleasures go Spice World and Showgirls. Both are incredibly bad I admit it.

Re: Films You Loved That No-One E;se Did

It was student film so not much distribution resulting in few people seeing it-The Big Bong Theory-about a family of dopers. The whole family smoked pot all the time and laid around doing nothing most of the time because they were too wasted out on pot. Plus they were always fighting with neighbors and stumbling around in super markets. The film was just pain funny. I couldn't stop laughing. The kids going to school high and passing out in classes. The father going to a nothing job and so wasted he was falling asleep. The mother wasted out on the floor and screaming at neighbors incoherently. This was one heck of a funny film.
