The Batman : Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

I've heard someone say Catwoman and Gordon are miscast because they're black under grounds of "PC race-swapping". I disagree with both, but Zoe as Catwoman would not constitute a race-swap.

Basically there are two kinds of people who critical of race-swapping in the name of so-called diversity:

1) Those who are literary purists and have genuine opinion that a change to a character affects their distinguished characteristic - whether than be skin tone, hair colour, height, what have you. Art over politics.

2) Those who rarely care about or know the source material at all but are more interested in the politics of it; they're critical a race change of a character that they thought of as white before solely as the segue to lambast political correctness, diversity. In short, they're racist; they're never as enthusiastic when it's a hair colour change.

Now, about Zoe: Catwoman has been portrayed as black in many incarnations of the character, comics and animation, two live-action (first was Eartha Kitt). So if there's a Batman character that would be given a "race-swap", Catwoman would be the first choice, as it's not much a change.

But it gets deeper than that.

Zoe is so light-skinned, you cannot differentiate her from the so-called white comic Catwoman anyway.

The comics never specify that Catwoman is white, nor do they say that she is for sure NOT black.

Casting Zoe is perfect all around, because you get the diversity points without actually changing anything about the character and still referencing source material where she was black. It's a win/win situation all around. They could have have gone Lupita Nyong'o black, but they didn't - Zoe is a safe choice, as you get a black Catwoman and a white Catwoman all in one. She white, folks.

Here's what the so-called Catwoman looks like like in the comics. She shares Zoe's same skin tone.

Selena Kyle, comics:

Zoe:

Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window.

Re: Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

I think she is a better Catwoman than Halle Berry ever was.

Don't get me wrong, I like Halle Berry and think she's a great actress, but her Catwoman sucked.

We don't talk about Bruno! No, no, no!

Re: Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

Yeah, that was just a bad role for her to take on.

So many stories, so little time.

Re: Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

Usually the race swapping bugs me. I get it when a white is swapled for a POC, but it still irks me slughtky because I'm obsessive compulsive about adaptation accuracy but Catwoman has always been played by both blacks and whites, and they were my intro to her, not the comics, so it doesn't bother me with this.

What about Roland Deschain in that fucking omnishambles of an adaptation?

Re: Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

I was just talking about that. The racevswap doesn't bother me as much as the whole look swap. I'd be annoyed if it was an equally as miscast white guy. He's supposed to be a Clint Eastwood type, and a big thing in the books is Detta calling him a "honk' muhfuh". That movie sucked for more than the miscast. I did like Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg. He fits.

She's not a very good actress.

Re: Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

You mean Catwoman is supposed to be so boring?

Re: Zoe Kravitz is perfect casting and not a "race-swap."

She was boring. No personality at all.
