Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

CNN Reporter:

"The US presence in Afghanistan is gone."

She said the remaining military equipment left behind was "demilitarized"/made inoperable. They left a bunch of Humvees and planes that can't be used.

Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

Strange. I've seen the pictures of Taliban special forces riding around in Humvees carrying MK46/48s.

Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

I assume they meant the ones that weren't already confiscated. The description makes it sound like they're treating Afghanistan as their own personal junkyard. And what a waste of money; if they brought all the equipment in, couldn't they have taken it out?

Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

You need a seaport (and a navy) to move that amount of materiel. They're notoriously difficult to hold during an evac, so the better option is to sabotage what you can't fly out with and head to the airbase.

It was a woefully inept withdrawal. Bagram practically defends itself. I have no idea why they didn't hold that and let the civilian population wait in safety.

Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

They could airlift the Humvees like they airlift animals. A Humvee weighs the same as a rhino:

Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

You can only fly a Humvee so far. Getting it to a port suspended under a helicopter is costly and would draw fire from the enemy. It ain't making it all the way to Oman, where the nearest friendly port is.

Besides, there's more to it than that. The materiel was no doubt at, or very near, the end of its serviceable life, and there's no demand for aging equipment back home. Military equipment costs money to store and maintain. A cost benefit analysis obviously demonstrated it was not worth returning the kit to base.

Sometimes when the need is no longer there for equipment that's in good condition, we'll sell it to a middle Eastern tyrant or an east European shit hole. Clearly it wasn't considered to be of enough value to drag it all out of there and eBay it.

It looks like, either they didn't factor in the Taliban getting hold of it all, or have decided it's more useful in their hands than as a pile of crumpled metal.

Whatever that means.

Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

Truth. That is the single biggest mystery to me: there are US bases all over the world, why not just hold on to Bagram?

Re: The withdrawal from Afghanistan is completed

China obviously insisted we get out the way so they could exploit the Taliban for the REEs.
