Classic Film : Poll: Better Decade For Movies? 1960s Or The 1970s?

Better Decade For Movies? 1960s Or The 1970s?

I won't vote, because I'm not sure anymore. A year ago (or 5), I wouldn't hesitate and say the 70s, but toward the end of that decade, the amount of great movies seemed to decline. Every decade has garbage - forget that.. I'm talking good to great movies.

I think foreign movies were much better in the 60s, especially Italian and Japanese movies. American movies seemed to have a more gritty, natural feel, but after jaws and star wars, studios took less chances, made less movies, and tried to hit a home run regardless of how bad the movie was.

I thought it was Heaven's Gate that ended the creative freedom the studios had given directors.

I can't decide. There are great movies in both decades, and bombs too. So no votes from me, but I have to say, there were some brilliant films packed into those 20 years!

Jaws, Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind tip it in the 1970s favor. Although, the 1960s has 2001: A Space Odyssey for it.

The 70s by far. The only year that didn't produce an unusual amount of great, interesting or fun movies was, for me, 1979. Every other year was amazing.

1968 and 1969 were great for American movies. And 1961 and 1962 were great for foreign movies. Otherwise, the 60s are almost boring. Of course, every year is going to have 2 or 3 goodies.

1970's IMHO:
   The French Connection
Dirty Harry
High Plains Drifter
Magnum Force
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Escape from Alcatraz
Godfather
Chinatown

Foreign movies took a huge dip in the 70s, but American movies were better in the 70s as opposed to the 60s.
