Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

wish it was 1985, i just don't like horror movies from after the '80s that much at all usually.

lukejbarnett

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

it's not that scary anyway, it's not a slasher

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

I agree with you, Luke. In fact, I don't like movies period much after the mid-80s. In fact, I usually regard 1986 as my cut-off year for really good movies. Have you seen any of these?

Something Wild (Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith) - ***3/4
Reform School Girls (Pat Ast gives my all-time funniest performance ever. You might like it for all the boobs.) - ***1/2
Manhunter (by turns a dark and melancholy film about the hunt for a serial killer) - ***1/2

There was a tape trader on the alt.tape-trading usenet board who would never accept anything in return if came out after 1989. One of the most difficult people ever because he had some shows that weren't release yet on DVD.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

horror movies started getting soft after 1984 for the most part bc they started cutting back on violence and gore after 1984, in 1985 and i don't think it's a coincidence that movies in general their quality went down in 1985.

never watched any of those movies but always read that manhunter is a great film and always heard something wild is a classic film. also in that funny jeff daniels sketch with chris farley talking about this movie i remember chris saying remember when melanie griffith got nude in this movie?

and then he said that was cool so i'll definitely be waiting this movie with batted breath knowing she shows nudity in this film bc she' was one of the most beautiful and hottest girls of the '80s.

i've watched reform school girls. i burned it to dvd. a very good movie. though i like pat ast a lot more in club life than in this movie.

wait how do you know i love boobs? have you been following/stalking me on this website? :)

my old and time honored line is "every movie is better with tits".

lukejbarnett

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

I remember reading some posts about the 21st century horror and you seemed pre-occupied with the prettiness of the girls. I am pretty sure you mentioned their boobs. So, no, I'm not stalking to you, I just watch a lot of horror film.

How do you know about Pat Ast in club life? you mean Andy Warhol and Studio 54? Or is "club life" the name of an actual movie?

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

it's a movie made in 1985 or 1984 with tony curtis and dee wallace. its a great film, a cult classic in the best way in that it's so strange and so not mainstream in it's style and grittiness, and content.

it's so underground and cutting edge in what they show. it's so raw and realistic, you feel like you are there in l.a. in some seedy bar with them.

Black Christmas (1974)
To All A Goodnight (1980)
You Better Watch Out aka Christmas Evil (1980)
Gremlins (1984)
Don't Open Till Christmas (1984)
Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

From horror anthology films:

Dead of Night (1945) ("The Christmas Party" segment)
Tales From the Crypt (1973) ("…And All Through the House" segment)

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

i have 4 of your films in my list. i hated don't open till christmas. what a stupid, boring and really pointless movie it is so bad bc the story is so bad and it feels stilted, and british boring. i was really surprised how boring is t was bc i was really excited about it for many years bc of it's cool video box cover.

i was amazed how bad it was when i watched it bc i had such high expectations. i blame british filmmakers. bc there was no reason for it to be bad bc it was made in 1984, the pinnacle and prime year of slasher movies.

so the only thing that could ruin it is british filmmakers. it doesn't feel like and it's like any slasher movie made in the '80s and thus is really boring.

in fact it's not a slasher film, it's a murder mystery film. they just lied to people by making the video box cover look like a slasher film video box cover.

also the episode of tales from the crypt with beverly d'angelo is really good. remember that episode?

gremlins is not a horror movie it's a comedy children's film. did you ever remember finding it in the horror section at blockbuster? no.

to all a good night i hated the first time i watched it then i loved it the 2nd time i watched it. wow, cant' believe how i changed on this film. it's the most well made and perennial, most by the book, formula, traditional slasher film ever made. and everything in it is the highest quality. didn't you love it like i do now after you watched it the first time?

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

It's both a slasher and a mystery film and it's a mediocre film at that but it's grown on me over the years. I watch it maybe every few years around the holidays.

also the episode of tales from the crypt with beverly d'angelo is really good. remember that episode?

No, I haven't seen every episode of that show.

gremlins is not a horror movie it's a comedy children's film. did you ever remember finding it in the horror section at blockbuster? no.

No, but I never found Jaws in the horror section either and many people consider that to be a horror film too.

I like it but I don't love it. I wouldn't say anything about it is "highest quality" though. It's a fun low budget slasher film.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

ok it's a widely known fact and ask joe dante who directed gremlins that it's not a horror film it's a kids film with comedy.

i mean even when i was a kid i knew it's a kids film. now, scary for kids, yes, inappropriate for kids under 10 definitely yes, but a kids film is what it is with edgy more violent and scary things than are usually found in kids films.

the feel and the spirit of the film is kids film and it was marketed and sectioned in the genre of kids film. the intentions of joe dante was to make a kids film. i mean the evil gremlins are never really killers so you can't call it a horror film.

they are trouble makers, so not homicidal maniacs. their motivations are just to have fun at the expense of people who are only at harm bc they happen to be around when the evil gremlins do bad things but not to kill people or do evil things.

so a horror film with bad creatures have to have bad intentions the evil gremlins never do.

and it's way too light a feel and tone of a film to be considered a horror film.

so what makes don't open 'tll christmas a slasher film? the fact that you see girls getting slashed? people get slashed in murder mystery suspense films. also to be a slasher film you have to have many people getting slashed otherwise it's a horror film but not a slasher film.

i know to all a good night is a high quality slasher film. i've watched at least 100 slasher films in my life and it's one of the most impressively and effectively in terms of making you feel the atmosphere and situations of the characters well best slasher films ever made.

it has this quality that is kind of black christmas(1974) look and feel and atmosphere and kind of friday the 13th part 2 look and feel and atmosphere. also it feels like an Italian giallo film that really makes it a better and more high quality slasher film than just a generic, unsophisticated run of the mill slasher film.

also you have to love it, bc your guy whom you love krug(david hess) from the last house on the left directed it!

I consider it to be a horror comedy. Dante's other horror films, Piranha and The Howling, had elements of comedy in them too but they were more straight up horror films esp. The Howling (still, the scene in the book store with Dick Miller always cracks me up!)

so what makes don't open 'tll christmas a slasher film? the fact that you see girls getting slashed?

Yes. It's a bit like a giallo, too. Someone like Argento could've done a better job directing it though…the plot and structure of the film is very giallo like.

Hmm, I don't think To All a Good Night feels much like a giallo or has the quality of Black Christmas. Its plot is much too simplistic. It's a pure by the numbers slasher movie with some interesting 'artistic' touches e.g., the skinny girl dancing on the balcony and singing to herself at the end of the film - I liked that. It's very low budget though. It reminds me a bit of Savage Weekend (1976), one of the earliest slasher films that was very low budget and amateurish to boot.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

you didn't address my evidence that gremlins doesn't intend to shock or disturb or scare people the intention of it is not to scare people it's to entertain kids. so how can you refute my point about this? in determining what genre a movie is it comes down to what the intentions of the director and writer is.

no, it's talking about the mood, tone, and structure and camera angles and camera setups of to all a good night is like black christmas(1974). the skillful and adept and clever ways they setup the terror and horror scenes are like the way they set up the terror and horror scenes in bc. also the well made style and high class of it is very much like bc.

the singing girl on the balcony is also very much like the phone ringing and ringing at the end of bc in tone and the idea of it, the sensibility of it also.

take the scene with the knight metal gear outfit. how it kills the girl that is very giallo in idea and structure.

I'm just giving my opinion on it, that's all. If you or Dante think it's a kids movie, that's fine. I think it's a horror comedy for all ages. People interpret art in different ways. Sometimes the artist/director doesn't see it the same way viewers see it.

It's like a poor man's Black Christmas.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

you said it's not like black christmas. why are you making this stuff up? you're wrong, it's extremely well made, there's no denying it's a classic horror film.

lukejbarnett

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

you said it's not like black christmas. why are you making this stuff up?

No, it's really not like Black Christmas. I'm trying to be generous to you by saying that it's like a "poor man's Black Christmas" (because I know you'll keep insisting that it is like Black Christmas) but that's as far as I'll go with comparing it to a groundbreaking and stylish film like Black Christmas. All in all, To All A Good Night is a fun low budget slasher film. It's good for what it is but it's nothing more than that.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

i just wish you could see the brilliant and utter genius in the classic an amazing film called to all a good night.

hey, here's a great idea: watch it again. didn't i tell you that i hated it the first time i watched it. the first time i watched it i was so bored i thought it is so bad of a film. then watched it on you tube and completely changed my mind about it.

now i see it's genius. and now i love it, the 2nd time i watched it i was really entertained by it, not bored at all. so let's find out if you change your mind completely at it the 2nd time you watch it ok?

can you watch it on you tube for me? did you say you changed your mind about don't open 'till christmas when you went from watching it 1 time to watching it 2 times? you used to not like it but then you loved it?

well will you at least concede and admit that it's close in quality to the best friday the 13th film made in the '80s? it looks and feels like one of the first 3 friday the 13th films.

I've watched To All A Goodnight more than once over the years…maybe 3 or 4 times total. My last viewing was sometime around Xmas 2020.

I like it but I don't hold it in the same high regard that you hold it in.

can you please respond to my message about christmas horror movies?

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

I dunno, I saw The Nightmare Before Christmas + Krampus. What about one of the Grinch movies? Perhaps the spirit of the original starts it. Personally… I would like something new. It's hard to pick between just remembering these 3. I don't know if the Grinch is horror. I just like horror itself as maybe my #1 favorite genre. I dunno if Harry Potter as fantasy beats it.

Better Watch Out 2016 was great I thought. Man, I hated that fucking kid.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

if you know anything about horror movies and love horror movies you have to watch silent night.

it's a hilarious and extremely well made slasher film that is totally satisfying in every way which is more than i can say for most horror movies being made in the last 10 years. usually horror movies in the last 10 years come up way short of being perfect or great like this film is on both fronts.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

Have you seen this movie trailer before? It is called The Misfits and it is starring Pierce Brosnan, Jamie Chung, and Tim Roth. It looks super interesting and I am looking forward to watching it. I highly recommend checking out the trailer too!

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

no, i haven't.
wow jamie chung? she's still in movies, movies that aren't just bad b movie grade movies?

she was in sucker punch in like 2009 and sorority row in 2009. so i'm really surprised she's still in maybe good movies. usually actresses who never made it big or pretty big, who have been in movies as an adult for 10 years are not in good movies anymore. and sometimes nowadays these actresses aren't in good movies for longer than 5 years even.

look at ashley greene now she's in bad b movies. just watched her in an action movie on tubi tv.com which was bad and a straight to video movie. so her career is already over at just early 30s now.

i'm glad tim roth is still getting work in movies. he became a small actor about 15 or 20 years ago. then again i guess he's always been a small movie actor and a character actor who it only seemed was a big movie actor and a famous actor bc of his tarantino movies.

Elf.

Will Ferrell is a fucking nightmare.

Proudly offering too-close encounters since 1977.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

Most of his movies aren't very good but I thought Elf was enjoyable.

Re: best christmas horror movies of all time?

Will Ferrell is just too much. I like peace and calm and he is chaos embodied. He's automatically obnoxious and I refuse to partake in any of his movies unless there is some familial obligation.
