Terminator 2: Judgment Day : Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

When the T-1000 is shot with a grenade launcher, and he knew in just milliseconds he was going to explode, Robert Patrick gives a very humanlike reaction: his mouth opens, his eyes widen; he gives his gives an "oh shit, I'm fucked" look.

Mistake or intentional?

How would a machine know the very human mannerism that dropping one's jaw conveys trepidation and dismay?

Did the T-1000 himself detect the machine-equivalent of dismay? It's likely he detected a problem, like when a computer detects an error and forces a restart, but did he feel this? Or only detect it? And if he only detected it, how did he know to convey this detection through his facial features to mimic human reaction?

Did the T-1000 learn to be more human from all the people he copied?

Monster, how should I feel? Creatures lie here, looking through the window.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

All of his interactions with people were humanlike. He had to imitate humans well enough to convince not just strangers that he was one of them but also the friends and family of those he was imitating. To do that requires replicating the functions of large parts of the brain and that emotional response to the grenade would probably be unavoidably included in any neural network or whatever he had.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

Early on in the film I thought his reaction to a mannequin was too soon to know how to look frustrated.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

Looks like he was already picking up human reactions from the start.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

He was confused/puzzled, not frustrated.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

It's a good question.

I think you can look at it three ways.

1. Mistake.

2. comedy.

3. The robots are pretty near AI and the thing was surprised and concerned.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

Intentional. The director would've told him to change it if it was an accident.

And we've seen from the beginning that the T-1000 does know how to behave as a human when he interacts with people, including John's foster parents.

And it shows it understands pain when it mimics Sarah.

So many stories, so little time.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

Yeah, and we also saw him suffer when he was in the liquid metal where he knew it was over.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

No.
He’s performance was flawless.

Without strife, your victory has no meaning.
Without strife, you do not advance.
Without strife, there is only stagnation.

Re: Did Robert Patrick make a mistake in this scene?

Interesting question.
How would the machines know to put in human reactions or emotions into their machines?
Probably from AI technology the humans programmed into it before the nukes.
