Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

just play the character as it is thus making every performance quite different.

Jack Nicholson would be a great example of my subject title.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Hmm I'm not an actor at all but I'd say I tend to enjoy performances from actors that just play the character without putting too much of their personality into the role. However, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference because I don't know these actors personally.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Have you ever seen the same actor play different roles in an ongoing sitcom? You might not know him personally but if he's bad in one role but then the acting is great in the second role it tells me that it wasn't his fault but maybe the writer's fault.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

I really don't care about this discussion at all.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Maybe you don't have the brains for it. I don't care about you at all.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

I've decided movie discussions aren't worth the hassel here. You're on your own.

hassle*

You've decided movie discussion on a movie board isn't worth it. Why are you here?

Yeah that's what I wrote. It's not worth it. The movie discussions aren't required to be a member. You're on your own.
So if you don't like it, you could find somewhere else to post. As a matter of fact the only reason there are as many film related discussions on filmboards is due to me nagging nimda to make it a priority. I did that a year into my membership here. It took months for him to relent. Then they fought me back. Trolled me to the point where I had to defend myself and troll them back. Gradually they fell in line.

Well now I'm like they were. Who the fuck cares? It's not that important to the site. So you're on your own.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

I'll try again since you seem really ignorant.

"Why are you here?"

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Don't bother trying. Just block me cuz I'm not having discussions about films. It's a waste of time.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

I've heard all your psychotic schizophrenic shit on here. I don't think it would be fair to go head-to-head without someone who is handicapped. But thanks for bumping my thread.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Interesting how you posted that same thing, three times at 1 minute intervals. Are you doing some kind of experiment?

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Yeah. His topic is really not something casual movie watchers would be able to answer. I think you would have to know the actor personally, or have worked on projects with that actor in order to know how similar the actor is to the role the actor played.

The scripts go to the actors. The actor decides whether that project is something the actor wants to get involved. What are the chances that scripts are sent out to actors who resemble the fictional role the actor will be playing? C'mon. See what I mean?

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Most actors play versions of themselves, which is just fine so long as they have the charisma to pull it off–I don't think it means they are necessarily less talented or worthy of praise. As you mention, Nicholson is a perfect example of someone who does this, and his charisma has rightly gotten him quite a lot of praise and numerous awards.

It's pretty rare for thespians to create the illusion that they have become a completely different person, and the danger here is that they draw attention to themselves and become a distraction from the story. But if they don't fall into that trap, that's fine too. I don't have a preference.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Well, roles where the character being played has multiple personalities are always a fun challenge and can show an actor's range. Toni Collette received some deserved praise and awards for her work on the show "The United States of Tara". And Tatiana Maslany did something similar in "Orphan Black" where she played clones who were raised in different parts of the world and had different personalities.

You later go on to mention writers, and that reminded me that writers often don't get enough credit or blame for the performances their scripts inspire. You won't be able to shine in a role unless the writer gave you something good to work with, and I also think that there are parts so badly written that no actor could pull them off, yet typically the actors and not the writers get blamed.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Writers don't get any credit anymore. Or blame. It's too bad.

Didn't Toni Collette play two characters (herself and another personality) on "Six Feet Under"

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

Completely depends on if the actor is capable of the nuance required to mix their own personality with the characters. I would say Jack Nicholson and Johnny Depp are two of the best at it.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

I like actors who can act differently.

It makes the movie more real and is impressive.

I take movies with famous personalities less seriously, but I do look at them like a fun art project someone I like it doing.

For instance, there's some actors that no matter what they do I will watch. But, I'm watching for them not the story.

Re: Do you like actors to insert their personality into movies, or

An actor should always play the character as written. However, if aspects of them align, they can always call on those, and often they add emphasis. Even the master Daniel Day Lewis will call forth aspects of himself while in character.

See his stoic, recalcitrant, dominating nature in Last of the Mohicans, My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, and There Will Be Blood. He's regularly lauded as being able to become anybody he wants, but only if that character has those core qualities!
