Horror : OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Another good depressing drug film is Spun.
Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Thanks for the rec. I haven't seen that one.

Also has some comedic parts but it shows how the other half live. On a horror note you should check out Resolution as it shows the desperation of habitual drug use also.
Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
I have that one on my watchlist - i will move it up the line.

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
It's so good and by far one of the most underrated films. It's one of the best edited films ever made. It's a very disturbing movie about drugs and realistic with a lot of comedy elements. The cast and acting were great, I thought Brittany Murphy was fantastic in it.
And if you want to see something more realistic than Requiem for a Dream, check Christiane F. (1981).

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
I didn't like it, but I didn't know anything about it before seeing it. I somehow thought it was going to be a horror movie. I watched it mainly because Jennifer Connelly was in it.
I suppose it could be seen as a modern counterpart to movies like The Lost Weekend, Days of Wine and Roses, Go Ask Alice and The Man With the Golden Arm.

It would be seen as a counterpart to those imo.

They all deal with addiction so they are similar in some way.
Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Obviously, but I was thinking more of the human side of things. What leads to that addiction and their feelings of low self worth and such in those. Leaving Las Vegas would be another good one.

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Remember being impressed with Burstyn, her part of the story was actually the most hard-hitting of all, for me.
Might rewatch it sometime soon.

^this is truth.
Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Yeah, her story was tragic. I believe the loneliness led to a lot of her problems with what we seen.
I believe she was nominated for an Academy Award - she deserved to win it.

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
The singular reason I have no reason to bother with the Oscars and haven't watched them since! Burstyn was outright robbed, Julie Roberts was better in Erin Brockovich?! What a fncking joke!
Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Absolutely. I have no time for them either. I remember Robert De Niro not winning in 91 for his role in Awakenings too. The awards have lost credibility in my eyes, long ago.

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
What did you think of Requiem for a Dream when you first seen it?
Extremely disappointed as pre-hype totally killed the movie for me. Yeah, it's a downer, but when you realize it's about four individuals digging their own grave the execution and way overdone soundtrack becomes so OTT and melodramatic I wanted to do heroin just to piss off Aronofsky.

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
I'm very surprised that a lot of people says it's one of the most disturbing films, after I realized it's very dark as the story. One of my absolute favorite films, I'm excited to re-watch it soon.

Maybe it is presumptuous on my part but I would assume it would make a lot of peoples favorite film lists.

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
a modern classic. well, for me anyway.
first viewing was a blind one, always the best for full impact. was in a shared house at the time n we'd rented it, watched it again same night with a housemate who'd been at work during the initial screening.
mesmirising performances by the main quartet & the score is immense. bought the cd as soon as it was out. Clint Mansell was on form again last year with High-Rise. talking of scores n Aronofsky, Pi is a migrane inducing masterpiece
anyway, Requiem, a fantastic film, good shout with the thread, spreading the word through the dying embers n all that
someone mentioned the book - i think the authour (Hubert Lewy Jr n the News) has a cameo as a prison guard, something like that anyway

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Thanks. I absolutely love Clint Mansell music - I have been listening to his music for years. The first viewing is the most shocking, for sure.
Requiem is a cautionary tale imo of what can happen when people try to chase the American dream and fail.
Yeah he had a cameo in there somewhere. I have the book and I read it - it is great.

One of my favorite movies. Extremely depressing and disturbing. The acting is amazing and the music is fantastic. I've watched it many times and was always left in a state of shock when it ended.
CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Agree wholeheartedly. For me, it was like been hit in the face with a sledgehammer, when I first seen it. Darren Aronofsky did a superb job. Have you seen The Fountain?

Re: OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
I went to it in the theater after reading the book and watching "Pi". It's not nearly as good as "Pi" or "The Fountain" (both of which are pretty much masterpieces), but it's still pretty decent. It's got the same problems that any movie adapted from modernist literature has. The music is good, but the music in "The Fountain" is even better. It sucks that both Aronofsky and Clint Mansell have gone downhill since those first three movies. I thought that Mansell's score for "Noah" was going to be awesome, but it turned out completely negligible, same as the awful film.

OT: Requiem for a Dream (2000)
I remember, some years ago, wanting to see 'Requiem for a Dream' very badly and it was on TV late one night so I was very much looking forward to it. Alas, the instant that music began, it was like a roller-coaster ride, involving many emotional highs and lows (but mainly lows, ha) that I couldn't escape from.
Don't be fooled by the passively poetic title - it was like an electric-shock to the head (excuse the pun). I have a penchant for these type of pessimistic films but I just knew by reading the synopsis that I would love it. It was like looking right into the sun without going blind. I was just consumed. 9/10
