Re: Those in Heaven will REJOICE over those in Hell!!!…

Heaven and Hell are what we make it on Earth. That other religious stuff is to keep the masses under control and is a form of brainwashing.

I'm not Catholic, but I believe in purgatory. As long as those poor souls have consciousness they have the option to repent and get out. I don't believe in eternal life in hell with no opportunity for escape. It makes God out to be a sadist, IMO. The saved should be helping those people to escape their fate. Yes, I believe in universal salvation and that Israel is a lot more inclusive than the visible Jews.

Romans 11:25-27

25I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not be conceited: A hardening in part has come to Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come from Zion; He will remove godlessness from Jacob. 27And this is My covenant with them when I take away their sins."

Is that really how it works? Anyone who would enjoy watching other people suffer is not a good person.

Here's something I originally posted at the IMDb Religion board on Mon Apr 14 2014:

Heaven cannot be properly enjoyed…

…unless the saints can behold the sufferings of the damned.

This was longstanding Christian tradition, exemplified in the writings of various divines of Christianity. Here's Thomas Aquinas's take on the subject:
Now everything is known the more for being compared with its contrary, because when contraries are placed beside one another they become more conspicuous. Wherefore in order that the happiness of the saints may be more delightful to them and that they may render more copious thanks to God for it, they are allowed to see perfectly the sufferings of the damned.

Here's Protestant theologian Jonathan Edwards:
When the saints in glory, therefore, shall see the doleful state of the damned, how will this heighten their sense of the blessedness of their own state, so exceedingly different from it! When they shall see how miserable others of their fellow creatures are, who were naturally in the same circumstances with themselves; when they shall see the smoke of their torment, and the raging of the flames of their burning, and hear their dolorous shrieks and cries, and consider that they in the mean time are in the most blissful state, and shall surely be in it to all eternity; how will they rejoice!

This idea is one that has been depicted repeatedly throughout the history of Christian art - the lurid goings-on in hell are always within view of God, the angels, and the saints in heaven. Examples:

Beginning in the 19th century, some Christian thinkers, influenced by the Enlightenment, appalled at traditional views of hell, formulated the doctrine of annihilationism (http://www.theopedia.com/Annihilationism), generally held by mainstream Christianity to be heretical.
