The World of Suzie Wong : The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

The love story between an American painter (William Holden) and a Chinese taxi girl (Nancy Kwan) in the demimonde of Hong Kong, this is a smoothly produced, psychologically weak novel adaptation by Richard Quine with lavishly pretty Far Eastern decor, many sentimentalities and a naive moral code beyond Christian conceptions. Apart from all the awful cliches and often very annoying stereotypes, it did entertain and divert my shallow mind, for the most part. Nancy Kwan won the Golden Globe which I think is well deserved. 5/10

Robert Lomax, tired of working in an office, wants to be an artist. So he moves to Hong Kong to try his hand at painting. Finding a cheap hotel, he checks in, only to find it's used by prostitutes and their "dates" they meet in the bar downstairs. Since he never picks up any of the ladies, they all want to know more about him. Eventually, he does hire one to model for him… and soon falls in love. However, since he's on a limited budget, he can't afford her exclusively, but doesn't want to "share" her with anyone else.

I'm wondering what is @azn_2's opinion of this movie. She'll probably say it's about Eboshy … ching chong ching chong ching chong.

I actually have seen this and liked it. I mean it's kitschy but nice.

I sure wish the U.K. had stood its ground and not given up Hong Kong so easily. They could have put huge demands on the People's Republic before the takeover. China is hesitant to roll the Red Army into Victoria.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

I dated a Chinese girl named Suzie Lee in high school. Lol. I really had a crush on her brother but kept that secret.

The whole Suzie Wong thing is a bit of an American stereotype. I had a fascination with Asian girls when I was a teenager.

Seriously though, was Suzie Wong a prostitute? I think it's implied but never stated.

What a sexual weirdo

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

You sound like an autistic virgin. Have you never dated or had a crush in your life? Lol.

If I like the girl, I have no reason to like her brother.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

Another idiot throwing the autistic insult around.

@Platonic_Caveman ban this fool!

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

Sorry, anyone who thinks dating or having a crush in high school is the sign of a "sexual weirdo" has obviously never had sex and doesn't function very well in society.

exactly i hated that. dont insult autistic people. we should be protected from this shit bc we are the most vulnerable bc of our lack of social skills.

So you use her you sexual deviant weirdo psycho?

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

it's very clearly that u never had any experience in dating or any social life whatsoever. it's not a bad thing, but u shouldn't talk big like that then. just read and learn from people who actually had experiences….

I think some of these people never leave their bedrooms. There's no life experience whatsoever.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

Be that as it may, however, gameboy needs to stop making fun of autistic people. It isn’t right.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

I'll concede it's flippant and not accurate. I have a friend who is fully functional and quite intelligent yet has autism. I'm not being serious, just repeating a meme which I probably shouldn't.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

oh i don't think it's just an American thing, i know men here too who are especially enamoured by Asian girls. i've even had an ex who was, i would say, almost obsessed with them. lol he dated 2 girls with Asian backgrounds (mixed races tho, one half-Korean/half-white and one half-Filipina/half-white) before me and would have like favourite Asian actresses and stuff lmao…

isn't PE obsessed with Korean girls too? and then there is @Chronic_Johnson here.. dudes are fucking weird.

Oh yeah, I know the submissive Asian female is a popular theme in Europe too. I've read feminists who excoriate white males who purposely seek out Asian women because they believe Western women are too domineering. There's that whole mail order bride gimmick.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

but Europeans, and mostly European dudes, call Asian females submissive. that's why they are fetishising Asian girls. it's a racist & sexist fact.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

Well, at the very least, I appreciate being tagged when you choose to talk shit haha.

I understand that some people see it as creepy or weird. But it's only preference. Just as you might prefer people who have a certain height, hair colour, body type or net worth. And because you're likely biologically predisposed to be attracted to certain things, I doubt you'd budge much on your standards. Or, if you did, it would only increase your chances of being unfaithful some day.

No, that was not a sophisticated way of calling you a slut.
Yes, if you thought it was, then you probably are one.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

I only fetishise Asian and Hispanic women, remember?

You? Fat chance.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

well then stop calling me a whore, okay? or even stop implying i'm having sex for money. i don't need to prostitute myself. i have enough money on my own, i don't need to sell my body for it. i stopped going after u for being a misogynistic, woman hating piece of shit, too.

Why is it 'weird' to be attracted to Asian girls.?

bc this whity fucktards are fetishising Asian girls.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

It's the people who compare being attracted to people with Asian heritage to something 'weird' or a 'fetish' who act racist.

People have preferences.

Some people are exclusively attracted to blondes too.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

as for if Suzie was a prostitute, oh yeah. she had suitors before Holden started crushing on her and they paid her. it's just handled very discreetly, as it is common in East Asian cultures.

Re: The World of Suzie Wong (Richard Quine, 1960)

But in the movie, if I remember correctly, they portray it just like that, as "suitors", not johns.

Azn, I went to high school with many Asians, mainly Japanese and Korean. Chinese don't have as much money and many didn't go to my high school. So I had many Japanese friends. But of course there were some Chinese. I dated this one Chinese girl. She was a very smart leftist chick.

I honestly don't remember many Eurasians when I was in school.
