Philosophy : Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

"In a little bit"
"In a while"
(and a million of other meaningless terms)

Why can't people just give a time? "Later" means nothing. If I'm waiting for someone, I don't wanna be taking a shower, vacuuming, playing drums, etc etc., because I wouldn't want them knocking on my door to no answer. Maybe I'm too considerate of others.

If someone says "It'll be a couple of hours", if a couple hours goes by, they hardly ever notify me of a new time frame.

Re: Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

Pet peeve of mine. I'm also never late for an appointment, and I hate it when other people are late when they say they'll show up at a certain time.

Re: Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

I'm always early, because I anticipate trains, heavy traffic, etc.. The way I see it, I can wait at home for 20 minutes, looking at the clock until I have to leave somewhere, OR, I can get there early, and not be in a rush, be relaxed.

I know from experience when one person is late for an appointment, then everyone else is screwed, too.

Re: Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

People who are always late, or won't give a specific time, are silently saying "Your life is not as important as mine." They're insinuating that you have nothing better to do than wait around for them for hours.

Re: Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

I agree. It's rude and presumptuous.

Sometimes you can’t predict an exact time you’ll be ready for something. I find it a bit odd if someone wants an exact time I’ll be there for something outside of a professional meeting.

Re: Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

Right of course, which is why people should say "I'll be there between 2 and 3, but if I'm late, I'll call you" - keep me informed.

I've noticed this is becoming the new norm, and then everyone loses consideration for others' time. Even if I'm not doing anything important, I don't like looking out the window, preparing, and not being able to do what I already had scheduled.

I wouldn't have said anything if it was a case or two, but this seems to happen by a lot of people I know, a lot of the time.

Re: Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

People who serve in the military seem to have that behavior conditioned out of them. And the instructors extrapolate that learned commitment to time during training to how soldiers will perform on field assignments.

Re: Why Aren't People Specific w/ Time?

I agree, I'd want a meeting time established and a call to let me know if they're running late. I would do the same for them.
