Monsters : Best Werewolf in Film

Best Werewolf in Film

In your opinion what werewolf would win the all time Oscar for Best Werewolf?

I'll go with 1941 The Wolfman, the classic.

I like that he primarily had human characteristics. Too many werewolves later were altered with special effects to be actually part wolf.

But there were many film werewolves before and after.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

It won an Academy Award for best makes up effects for that transformation scene, right? I think it still looks good today.

Not sure what my number 2 spot would be. Maybe The Howling.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

Yeah but that's hardly the fault of the original. Many a decent movie can boast awful sequels.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

That is still the best transformation scene.
You look at that, and you can feel the pain.

I love that movie. So well done!

In the 80s, it was like nothing we had ever seen.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

I'm a big fan of special effects makeup and practical effects. I even watched the competition show Face Off which is like the Project Runway of special effects makeup. CGI can be good but when it bad it's annoying and not fun, as with practical effects. At least that's how I feel about it.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

agreed!

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

They had to work within their abilities and it wasn’t till the 1980s that full body transformations could be achieved. I’m a big fan of mutating bodies mixed with emotional turmoil so will go for Dee Wallace in The Howling.

That movie was such a brilliant and unique take on the werewolf genre. Jack and James were on fire!

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

Nobody does scary sexy like Spader!

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

He certainly proved that in this. He really has done well being sexy and smarmy at the same time in a number of roles
I believe I'll watch this tonight. It's been a while.👍

Me too! It's right here.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

Are you familiar with this series? I liked it.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

I'm not familiar with that at all, but I'll check it out. Thanks.

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

Their back-and-forth was very good, and a good representation of how two male animals would circle each other, and do a type of dance to establish dominance. Jack came off mature as he's figuring out control, while Spader came off as the young pup with something to prove, new to power, wanting to push it.

There was such great chemistry in this film as well. Good casting.

The ending, the line Michelle said about "smelling"….? I LOVED it!

Re: Best Werewolf in Film

I second (or third) David Naughton in An American Werewolf in London.

Runners-up would be:

Oliver Reed in The Curse of the Werewolf (1961), my favorite Hammer Horror film:

Michael Landon in I Was A Teenage Werewolf (1957):

Henry Hull in Werewolf of London (1935), the first talkie werewolf film:
