I'm watching a documentary from 2013

….on the History channel and they're talking about "someday very soon, we're going to be facing a global pandemic and it will probably originate out of China and then Europe, probably Russia, Italy…… hospitals will be understaffed and underprepared.

They also said many medical professionals will hide their skillsets if they want to live because there may become a bounty on their head and a mandate to be called into work.

It will start with one patient, probably with respiratory distress getting shipped to a specialty hospital so that means two hospitals get infected and it starts from there. People will go to work feeling invulnerable, and thus it'll spread.

At the beginning of this 2013 documentary, they made a disclaimer that this is just an illustration and "no one is any real danger."

They talked about people fleeing their homes for "safer grounds."

It's just interesting watching a 7 year old documentary accurately predict this. They're even talking about people wearing masks, telling people to stay home, no unnecessary travel, people bugging out…. Keeping in mind when this was made, it's incredibly accurate.

Heh. The reality is now; we flee our homes because we're bored. And need hair-cuts.

The barbers are all closed here. You need to buy your own hair razor.

They’ve been saying a global pandemic was possible for years. If I keep saying it’s going to rain on Saturday morning every week eventually I’ll be right.

Re: I'm watching a documentary from 2013

They said we get one every so many years so they can plan on it, so it's not rocket science. What I found fascinating was how they anticipated it'd come out of China and how they predicted exactly what we're doing now, and the locations it'd hit here.

I guess human behaviour is what it is and we're predictable animals too.

It's just very eerie watching this and living it at the same time.

Re: I'm watching a documentary from 2013

I find it more logical than prophetic tbh.

Re: I'm watching a documentary from 2013

I'm just interested in the fact that this documentary came out 7 years ago, mentioned all those other viruses and flus as well. This is a mockumentary discussing what we'd do, and it's accurate.

My feelings just have to do with the irony of watching a 7 year old program while we're experiencing COVID at the same time.

I think if we weren't going through this pandemic right now and I was watching this, I wouldn't have the same feelings. If I watched this in November 2019 I wouldn't bother writing anything at all. I understand we periodically have pandemics cyclically.

Again it's just the irony of what station I plunked on the TV in this present moment and what's going on in this present moment in the world. That's all.

Many pandemics have started in China, it’s a very disturbing trend.

Re: I'm watching a documentary from 2013

I can't help but wonder if much like the coronavirus, if the wet markets really contribute to so many of these viruses and flus.

I've just never seen something of this magnitude.

Okay, so see, now what the next "mockumentary" is talking about is "life after humans" and they're talking about Notre Dame Cathedral. It's so sad, as we all would never have anticipated those dreadful fires. This program is just discussing what would happen regarding degradation if human life disappeared. But it never anticipated raging fires destroying the structure.

See? No irony there.

Re: I'm watching a documentary from 2013

Not really prophetic when you consider we already went through milder pandemics before that documentary date. Bird flu, swine flu, SARS…it isn't a stretch to assume an awful virus would come from China and how it would spread.

Re: I'm watching a documentary from 2013

It's over. It was an hour special on the History channel and it was just posing that we're due for another pandemic as we have one every so many years. But much like you, I have never seen anything of this magnitude where we're on lockdown.

Up where I live, we're also hoarding guns and ammo so let that tell you that while we're very helpful (like everyone on our street will help each other) we wouldn't let people pass IF it were to EVER get to that point (and I sincerely doubt it will get that bad….but then again I never thought it would get this bad). Every house here has "at least" one firearm. (I'm waiting for the anti-gun people to come at me with pitchforks and torches). That's country living though.

The other viruses and flus we've seen were, as you've said, never this bad (that I recall). Not to where doctors closed down seeing patients, and surgeries were called off, and businesses were closed down for months,…globally on such a massive scale. It was the awkwardness of watching their predictions 7 years ago as we're going through it exactly as they anticipated it.

Remember, these are all just "mockumentaries" showing what possibilities would be anticipated. They got THIS one right with everyone wearing masks just to go to the store. I don't recall ever having to do that before.

Re: I'm watching a documentary from 2013

That was the thing. The way they portrayed this "next pandemic" was so extensively more graphic and expansive than anything in our lifetime. We don't think much of people in Asia wearing masks, but they were showing Americans and Europeans wearing them, they were showing lockdowns and even areas closed to the public.

I think because in my own lifetime I've never seen anything so extensive and graphic and revolutionary, watching something from 7 years ago predict even our social distancing, it was wild.
