The Walking Dead : What are you reading?

What are you reading?

Books, magazines, flyers, coasters….

I am finishing 'The Mirror and The Light', the third book in the Wolf Hall trilogy about Thomas Cromwell. Fantastic series.

Re: What are you reading?

Everything by Alan Ryan, one of the most brilliant historians of political philosophy in the world. I have these two enormous tomes by him, which I can barely hold up.

Re: What are you reading?

Ok, I don't even know who that is! I will have to look into this.

Re: What are you reading?

He's really brilliant, and not that hard to read. I'd recommend The Making of Modern Liberalism and On Politics.

Re: What are you reading?

I will ask MMC2 for his take on these, as well, if you don't mind.

Re: What are you reading?

A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Childhood was magical in his poems.

Re: What are you reading?

Wow! Never heard of that one either (though of course I have read the author).

Re: What are you reading?

Oh, I loved those!

Re: What are you reading?

I just started so you've been publicly shamed by Jon Ronson. That guy cracks me up

Re: What are you reading?

Jon Ronson?

Re: What are you reading?

His brother is Yim Yonson, who went to Yale.

Re: What are you reading?

…yes? He did the men that stare at goats -i haven't read that one yet. But I read the psychopath test and it was really great.

I like the way he writes so much that I even bought one he wrote about his life and I usually don't like those -even about people I like. Funny without seeming too smug

Re: What are you reading?

Ok, I will check that out.

Re: What are you reading?

I’m on the penultimate (unless they continue) TLK book. It’s a slow, slow progression.

Hep: "I'll post a topless picture if you do the same ;)"

Re: What are you reading?

I still like them. They are just all the same, same plot, every time.

Re: What are you reading?

Which episode are you at on the new season?

Hep: "I'll post a topless picture if you do the same ;)"

Re: What are you reading?

5. I am moving slow through it.

Re: What are you reading?

Thoughts on ep 4? I thought it was incredible. Pretty OTT in places, but dayum that was a battle

Re: What are you reading?

Really good.

People seem upset about Edward, but he is meant to be a weak and vain king.

And like Bentley did, I laughed when Cnut was yelling 'Brida, give me your saex! Your saex!'

Re: What are you reading?

Indeed, Edward is exactly as he is in the books. He also transcended well though from s2 where he was literally just a boy. It was strange how I ended up routing for Alfred’s wife!

Read this at your peril

It will be interesting in the future seasons now Uhtred has the actual King in waiting to safeguard

Re: What are you reading?

Yes, regarding your spoiler, because I actually like those parts of those books.

And there's this nympho wife of a priest in the later books, and I have no idea how they will manage that.

Re: What are you reading?

Steapa was totally different in the show. In the books he was extremely uncouth and became friends with Uhtred. In the show he was this generic, well spoken, antagonist blob that just constantly tried to thwart anything the good guys did.

His death meant nothing; is he still alive in the books? I can’t remember him dying.

Re: What are you reading?

Still Here Rowan Blanchard if I haven’t said it already

Hello

Hello

Re: What are you reading?

None of your damn business.

Re: What are you reading?

If It Bleeds by Stephen King

Re: What are you reading?

How's that? Last King book I read was Under the Dome.

Re: What are you reading?

The first story was mediocre. The second one has been a bit better thus far.

I think it might be fair to say that Mr. King has lost a bit off of his fastball in his golden years.

Re: What are you reading?

Stephen King is an incredibly mediocre writer.

Re: What are you reading?

I won't argue with you there. I will say that he has written some entertaining books over the years. However, most of those were when he was younger. His recent output has been very hit or miss. And even the ones that hit are more like…glancing blows.

Re: What are you reading?

I've always thought he was awful. But then I'm a snob.

Re: What are you reading?

True.

Re: What are you reading?

We are a long way from The Stand or Pet Semetary.

Re: What are you reading?

Exactly.

Joyland was a solid little book. Otherwise it's been mostly mediocre. Good enough that you don't feel like you completely wasted your time but nothing that makes you want to run out and recommend it to a friend either.

Re: What are you reading?

Let us know how it is when you finish! The last ones I read by him were Doctor Sleep and 10/22/63

Re: What are you reading?

Is 10/22/63 a prequel to the Kennedy Assassination book 11/22/63?

Re: What are you reading?

The stir crazy is getting to my brain!

Re: What are you reading?

I didn’t care for Doctor Sleep, but I did enjoy 11/22/63.

Re: What are you reading?

Doctor Sleep was…not good. I haven't watched the movie yet either.

11/22/63 was pretty good and I'm a sucker for Kennedy stuff but it was also like…200 pages longer than it probably needed to be.

Re: What are you reading?

After Doctor Sleep he's had 8 books:

Joyland was a fun book. Short, kinda punchy, kinda creepy. Solid.

Mr. Mercedes was decent. Not in his comfort zone. Fun enough little detective book.

Revival was pretty bad. So bad that I honestly don't remember it.

Finders Keepers was meh. A continuation of Mr. Mercedes.

End of Watch was the finale of the Mr. Mercedes trilogy and wasn't bad. It got a little weird.

Sleeping Beauties he wrote with one of his kids and it was boring. Long and boring and anticlimactic.

The Outsider was solid. I enjoyed it.

The Institute was fine. It basically tried to replicate the formula from Firestarter without being as entertaining as Firestarter.

Re: What are you reading?

Thanks for that! I can’t believe how behind I am. I used to read his books as soon as they’d come out.
I agree about 11/22/63. There’s a lot of editing that should have happened while the protagonist was teaching school in Texas.
I stopped getting excited about his books after From a Buick 88, Dream Catcher, and Under the Dome. I didn’t enjoy any of those. So I’m being more cautious about which of his books I pick up.

Re: What are you reading?

I think I'm one of the few people who mostly liked Under the Dome. The ending was stupid but I enjoyed the whole "small town devolves into chaos in the hands of a power hungry leader" plot.

Dreamcatcher was not great.

Don't know if you've read the Dark Tower books in their entirety but The Wind Through the Keyhole was pretty good.

Re: What are you reading?

Me too. First half was pretty good.

Re: What are you reading?

Also, have you read any of Joe Hill's stuff? He's King's son and his books have a sort of "young King" vibe to them.

Re: What are you reading?

I haven’t yet. Which of his books do you recommend?
