Re: Another bug thread.

I did once go to a museum called Peace Prayer Park, which was dedicated to the Battle of Okinawa. It was presented from the perspective of the Okinawans, of course. I vividly remember seeing pictures of American soldiers doing terrible things; one in particular featured a young man holding up the detached arm and torso of an Okinawan, grinning ear to ear.

Another of the rooms featured enormous tomes sitting on pedestals; half of them were written in their original Japanese, and the other half were translated into English. One of the journal entries recovered told of a young girl who snuck from the cave her family was hiding in to fetch water from the lake. She thought it tasted funny, but drank anyway. It turned out the lake had been tainted by the presence of decomposing bodies, which she found when she returned again at dusk.

There was a room built to emulate a cave that you had to duck down into to enter. The room would shake, as a rumbling sounded overhead, and darkness enveloped all but the faint glow of a lamp. A baby cried and was silenced. We were told of the ways in which new mothers had to smother their children, lest American soldiers hear the crying and come to kill them all.

I've never been able to side with the Americans on that particular battle because of my visit to that museum.

Re: Another bug thread.

Interesting. Both sides had horror stories to tell I guess. Nothing is ever black and white. But you know the Japanese committed horrible atrocities as well. But actually the world might be a better place if Japan had conquered northern China.

On a lighter note, there is a Okinawan restaurant near my house which I go to. It's an interesting take on Japanese. Doctor Tokyo (remember him) dined there too.

Re: Another bug thread.

You responded right as I refreshed the page, ha. Forgive the rapid response.

The Japanese did terrible things. The Okinawans didn't. They are entirely different ethnicities. Their culture, language, and history is distinct. Okinawa didn't technically become part of the Japanese empire until the late 1800s; neither the Okinawans nor the Japanese see Okinawans as being Japanese.

Re: Another bug thread.

Pffffffffft. Britain won because of their alliance with America. Russia was no help to Western Europe. They only used the war to enslave Eastern Europe.

Re: Another bug thread.

This reminds me of when you took against these lyrics from Day in the Life.

I saw a film today, oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book
I'd love to turn you on

You thought it was about WW2 and The Beatles hadn’t recognised the major part the US played in the war.

Re: Another bug thread.

Whatever. Dude, if America had not entered the war the Nazis would have won.

I'll tell you exactly what would have happened. If the Germans had conquered Britain they would have played up the common 'Germanic' ancestry of the Germans and the English. They would have kept the monarchy as figure heads (the royal family is German anyway) and installed the predecessors of the National Front in power as their English lords. Much of the English aristocracy would have found fascism quite amenable.

There would have been a Greater Germany in Western Europe, not just ethnically German, but an alliance of all Germanic peoples.

Re: Another bug thread.

Still funny though…

Anyway, have you heard of this film?

Re: Another bug thread.

Interesting.
It Happened Here (also known as It Happened Here: The Story of Hitler's England) is a black-and white 1964 British World War II film written, produced and directed by Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo, who began work on the film as teenagers. The film's largely amateur production took some eight years, using volunteer actors with some support from professional filmmakers.[1]

It Happened Here shows an alternative history where the United Kingdom has been invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany. The plot follows the experiences of an Irish nurse working in England, who encounters people who believe collaboration with the invaders is for the best whilst others are involved in the resistance movement against the occupiers and their local collaborators.[1]

Didn't PM Neville Chamberlain oppose war with Germany?

He tried to appease and avoid (or delay) war but wasn’t in favour of Hitler. We weren’t all that ready for another war anyway.

Well he's gone down in history as a fool, right? Churchill stepped in and knew just what to do.

History doesn’t make him look good.

But at the time he was also being criticised for spending too much on rearmament so I think he knew war was inevitable. Things are not always so black and white.

Re: Another bug thread.

Oh, and remember the Russians greeted the Germans as a liberating army. The Russian people hated Stalin.

Re: Another bug thread.

Not sure about the first. Some kind of bagge.

The second is a tvestjärt (a two-bum)

-Sweden.

Re: Another bug thread.

Okay, I went to my Swedish to English translator and bagge comes out as a ram, you know, a goat. So I googled and bagge is apparently Swedish for beetle. The creature is not even an insect. The first one is really a type of .

"Two-bum"? Two butts? Two pinchers? Lol.

Re: Another bug thread.

Oh it looked like a beetle to me. I'm
not exactly a bug expert. A goat is a get. Never heard it referred to as a bagge.

Yep, a two-bum (referring to the punchers)! I think it's a cute name for them. They usually come invading towards the end of summer.

Re: Another bug thread.

I said the first one is a crustacean or kräftdjur in Swedish but for some reason it got edited out.

And I tell you no lie, the google translator says a bagge is a ram.

Re: Another bug thread.

It's a generic word for bug.

I guess I never talk about male sheep. Is a ram a goat?

Re: Another bug thread.

The google translator didn't come out in the link. It's gonna "bug" me now that it came out wrong. Why ram?

Just asked my boyfriend. He didn't think of a ram either when I said "bagge". How sexist of us.

Edit: asked one of my buddies and he said "what….you becoming a fucking farmer or something?"

Re: Another bug thread.

Slater is an odd name for it. I've never heard that in the U.S. It must be British?

Re: Another bug thread.

Funny story. About 15 years ago I was in meeting… Office Space movie like bullshit. blah blah blah blah and blah blah blah blah. As I was sitting there, I was seated at the table next to a poindexter like program engineer. They guy had the personality of a cement block. Back then I wore those large thick framed "clark kent" like glasses. Look,I liked the larger heavier frame on my face. Those thin frames itched my face. Anyways, a bee landed on the side of glasses, the part of the frame, behind the lens, that extends to your ears. Instead of seeing a small harmless bee out of the corner of my eye, I saw giant 1950s scifi b-movie GIANT MONSTER INSECT!!! I leaped out of my seat screaming like a girl, scared the living shit out of me. Meanwhile, the bee falls harmlessly to the table, and very casual and relaxed in nature the programmer next to me swatted the bee dead with his notepad. The look on people's faces in the room, still gives me nightmares to this day.
