Soylent Green (1973)

A tale of Earth in despair in 2022. Natural food like fruits, vegetables, and meat among others are now extinct. Earth is overpopulated and New York City has 40 million starving, poverty-stricken people. The only way they survive is with water rations and eating a mysterious food called Soylent. A detective investigates the murder of the president of the Soylent company. The truth he uncovers is more disturbing than the Earth in turmoil when he learns the secret ingredient of Soylent Green.

Chuck is a personal hero to me. This film is a classic. Edward G. Robinsons curtain call.

He passed shortly after he filmed his scenes. And his scenes with Heston are beautiful.

The only poster who had his account banned 4 times without ever breaking any rules each of those times.

Excellent movie

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

Great film. And no tough guy can get away with a scarf/cravat thingee like Chuck Heston does in this film.

Not in the original book though.

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

Interesting. What is Soylent Green in the book?

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

It wasn’t in the book. The nearest reference is “soylent steaks” and soylent is made from soya and lentils. This is a case of a film improving on the initial story and the cannibalism solution to world hunger would probably have come as a surprise to those who had read the book. I saw it when it came out and the reveal was unexpected (those blessed times before internet spoilers).

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

Odd, because in the movie cannibalism is their solution to overpopulation. It seems like the whole premise of the story would be gutted if Soylent Green was made of tofu.

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

It was more of a crime thriller set in a dystopian future and didn’t feature a conspiracy. It’s like making a new version of Animal Farm where the pigs set up a secret slaughterhouse and a horse detective uncovers the truth of where their food comes from.

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

I still don't get it though. In the movie the big shocking revelation is that Soylent Green is made of people. If it's just a soy patty then what's the big deal?

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

In the book it wasn’t a big deal because it wasn’t in the story.

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

Love these end-of-the-world with Chuck Heston films.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Soylent Green (1973)

Great movie!!! To bad it didn't come true. Women are considered furniture in the future? How the hell did that NOT happen?

A classic film, and I saw the ending coming long before it arrived.
