Video Games : Games that have an excellent story or world stuck with crap gameplay?

This is all I could think about while playing Mafia III. The plot is interesting, the characters memorable, the motion capture acting rivals The Last of Us in some parts, and it's the best I've ever seen historical period details implemented in a game. But experiencing that story requires trudging through a million completely shallow and copy and paste turf-taking missions. It's needless padding in a game where you already can't use fast travel!

Any other games where the gap between story quality and gameplay quality is so pronounced?

The Last of Us is a perfect example.

Same with Bioshock.

Even the lovers of those games rarely mention the game play, it's all about the story and world's of those games.

I wouldn't like The Last of Us as much as I do if it just had a great story. There are plenty of reviews that praise its combat too. Klop and I have talked about why it is so good in the past.

Gameplay (and level design) is in-fact what I've talked about the most [my Grounded and Survivor difficulty posts for example) but whatever can't be bothered going through all this again. I wouldn't have completed it 8 times if I thought the gameplay wasn't great.

I'd have to agree. Mafia III has an excellent story, but is crap or mediocre everywhere else.

The original mother/earthbound zero I find notable since there is a part near the end I needed to level grind 8-12 hours. The maker or whoever admitted he forgot to test that part. You go from guys being medium difficulty to killing your ass in a move or so. It was insane. Your only choice for progress is to go backward and level grind until very strong.

Hint: progress with lloyd until he does that factory thing whatever he does then go back and get teddy if possible. Teddy becomes inhumanly strong but the normal way you don't keep him long at all. I did this wrong but it was too late to go back :(

Did anybody else notice the similarities between Al Pachino's detective character and Robert de Niro's criminal character in Heat? Even though they were on exact opposite sides of the law. Intense about their work, personal lives being secondary, trying to find competent, loyal help, etc. It almost felt like there was a mutual respect, that each gave the other focus, and they realized it.
