Re: Favorite Directors From The 1930s?

Michael Curtiz. Casablanca.

Re: Favorite Directors From The 1930s?

Fun Facts:

* Michael Curtiz is the only person ever to get a write-in nomination for Best Director (Captain Blood, 1935)

* He was also the first director to score two directing nominations in one year (Four Daughters and Angels With Dirty Faces, 1938). Frank Lloyd had won the second Oscar (1928/29) for The Divine Lady, as well as being nominated for Drag and Weary River, but even the academy has stated that that year's nominations list was discretionary rather than official. Steven Soderbergh is the only other person with two directing nominations in one year, being nominated for Erin Brockovich and winning for Traffic (2000).

* Curtiz directed Tenderloin (1928), a part-talkie which was promoted as being the first feature film to contain acted dialogue. It flopped and is now lost.

Re: Favorite Directors From The 1930s?

I'll second Curtiz, the most underrated director of all time.

His career spanned some fifty years during which he helmed some of the greatest movies ever made, despite the fact that no one could understand a single word he said.

And This, Too, Shall Pass Away

Re: Favorite Directors From The 1930s?

Yes I've seen those, sorry I should have made my comment more clear I meant there's still so much I have to see in terms of cinema in general so many directors filmographies unexplored but actually come to think of it there's still a bunch of Capra I'd like to see too. So far I've seen 7 Capra films -

You Can't Take it With You
Mr. Deeds Goes To Town
Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Arsenic & Old Lace
It's A Wonderful Life
Lost Horizon
It Happened One Night

I've only seen some of them once and wanna re-watch them all.

Yeah that one's on my list, I found it online in very good quality and I have it waiting in a playlist with hundreds of over movies. Thanks for recommending it, I always only hear good things.
