Horror : What are 00s slashers known for?

What are 00s slashers known for?

70s - giallos, murder mysteries, artsy gore and surrealism, TCM and Halloween.

80s - the golden age of slashers.

90s - the Scream era, satires with less gore and nudity, but more TV actors.

However, I can't think of something truly distinctive about the 00s slashers. They have almost become a rarity, because plenty of other sub-genres have gained popularity. I guess explaining origins has become more frequent and detailed mainly because of all the remakes and prequels to popular slashers. I guess the characters have become more stupid than ever, to the point you now officially cheer for the killer even if it's not an iconic one. The death scene have become more brutal and gorier, but less creative. There's also a lot of genre-mixing these days. Some slashers are part home invasion/kidnapping movies which, if executed properly, makes them more effective and even realistic.

Sadly, none of that compares to slasher movie tropes from the 80s and to a lesser extent - the 90s. Even non-horror moviegoers probably can recognize a slasher of that period just from a single shot.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Yeah, it's pretty much remake crap. The movie/TV culture of today is more about looking backward than doing something fresh or original.

Surprisingly, the tone of more modern slashers and horror movies has gone to the torture porn side.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Oh yeah, torture porn. I don't even know whether to consider them slashers. But it's close enough, I guess. It fits within the kidnapping sub-genre.

The weird thing is that TV finally started producing more slasher shows. Whether they're good or not, it's a topic for another day. I guess it's only normal considering we're living in the golden age of television, because of creative freedom and less censorship.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Well, I guess you could say tv started producing more slasher shows, given that just doing one would basically be more than they ever did before. But you say it like there's some significant number, what has there been, like three and eight years?

We aren't in a golden age of tv either. It's probably still less interesting then the tv of the '60s, '70s, and 90s.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Scream Queens, Scream and Harper's Island come to mind. There might be more to come. I say it's weird, because slasher movies are definitely not as important these days. I think some of the characters in Scream even joked about TV not making slasher series.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Yeah, that's all I can think of too. Three shows, one of which only made it one season, all pretty soft. After a few years of Hannibal over on NBC I was hoping FOX would really go for it with Scream Queens, but they didn't.

I'm not really sure how weird it is. The Walking Dead is like one of the biggest things on tv, so it's not too weird some networks would dip their toe into other horror genres. With Scream Queens that probably only happened because the creator did that Glee show for Fox, and then America Horror Story on their sister channel FX. Harper's Island came before that stuff, but that just seemed like a reaction to Lost; like CBS wanted their own thing with some kind of mystery about what's happening going on. All the shows that were a reaction to Lost were horror shows of some type, probably because of the Smoke Monster.

It's actually kind of weird that there really haven't been more slasher shows. I mean, what are slasher stereotypically? Bunch of pretty teens and twenty somethings hanging out, get tied up into some a mystery (sometimes anyways), get picked off by a killer. Basically you'd be doing something like My So Called Life, Freaks and Geeks, or Skinsbut where people are being killed as well.

For being produced by Michael Bay?

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Good one. Really tells you a lot, doesn't it.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Other than a few remakes and the Hatchet series, there hasn't been much.

Hatchet probably came closest to recapturing what those 80s slashers were like, but it tended to turn into parody at times. Which was OK. I enjoyed the Hatchet movies. They were more of an exception though. The majority of slashers in the 2000's seemed to resemble those Platinum Dunes remakes.

So, right, it's been a pretty bad couple of decades for the genre.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

Hatchet is definitely one of the few good examples. Nothing special, but crazy gory and 80s-ish, even with Kane Hodder playing the killer. It really you a lot that a weak attempt such as Valentine (2001) is much better than most of the slashers in the last 5-8 years.

Re: What are 00s slashers known for?

the the Scream era slashers are pretty good. fewer came out than the 80's but they had good production value and were good mysteries.

the 80's were my favorite era for slashers but i think i prefer the Scream era now by far

Blood, gore, and rehash.

They are known for being filmed with notso-Steadicam and color graded to blue or green. They also aren't as much fun as the earlier decades, more about gore and intensity than any cheesy elements.
