Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

I find the whole thought of obsessing over a movie, or for that matter, over anything a bit strange and scary.
I hear that word all of the time, though, in reference to things that people like very much. I'll watch a You Tube video where someone bought some things at a store and they will say, "I'm obsessed with this make up, lamp, these shoes!"
It seems that obsess has taken on a whole new meaning.

The earth is always shifting under me. I just try my best to hang on tight.
Since Barclays has always been a strange one , I have no doubt that she really does obsess on movies and for that matter, many things.

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

Nah. Barclays made a thread asking people to post a scene from a movie they are obsessed with. I posted an unforgettable scene from Carrie. I commented that I liked the film, but I wasn't obsessed with it. According to her/him/ IT, I need a refresher course in reading comprehension. The Thing didn't want me to comment on a movie I like. It has to be a movie I'm Obsessed with.
And she wonders why people don't care to discuss movies with her.

Yeah…. I walked into that one. That isn't the only time today!

Ah! I assumed this was about Croft now that's someone obsessed.

True! I have him blocked, but if he saw that, I have no doubt that he posted a scene featuring his beloved.

It's just superlative speach. People often say they're DYING of laughter. Are they really?

You are absolutely correct. I am still getting use to the obsession thing.

Remember that whole crazy thing when Avatar came out… all the loony people who were legit getting depressed because they wished they could live in that world?

It even inspired the creation of a word: Avatards

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

I don't remember that. Sounds crazy!

From UrbanDictionary.com:

Post-Avatar Depression

A serious bout of emotional depression usually occuring after watching James Cameron's "Avatar", and realizing that no matter what, our world will never be as cool as that, and you will never be able to ride a dragon, live in trees, or have awesome blue skin.

Friend 1: "Hey man is Chris coming to club tonight?"
Friend 2: "Naw man, he's still going through post-avatar depression…"

Audiences experience 'Avatar' blues

(CNN) – James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

On the fan forum site "Avatar Forums," a topic thread entitled "Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible," has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.

"I wasn't depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy ," Baghdassarian said. "But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed."

A post by a user called Elequin expresses an almost obsessive relationship with the film.

"That's all I have been doing as of late, searching the Internet for more info about 'Avatar.' I guess that helps. It's so hard I can't force myself to think that it's just a movie, and to get over it, that living like the Na'vi will never happen. I think I need a rebound movie," Elequin posted.

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site "Naviblue" that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie.

"Ever since I went to see 'Avatar' I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' "

Holy Crap! I had no idea it was this crazy. I remember my friends and some family members recommending it enthusiastically, but I didn't know anything about this insanity.

I hated that movie so much I wanted to punch my friends for dragging me to go watch it.

It is still on my top 5 most hated movies.

You mean like people learning to speak Na'vi, and James Cameron acting like he saved the world with that movie?

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

How about Lord of the Rings?

People speaking elvish and even getting their ears worked on by a surgeon to be pointy?

I don't get it. I really don't.

I got the impression he thought we would treat our own planet better because of his movie.

My movie obsession made me consider a tattoo but after a few years the urge passed.

Dead Man's Shoes. It's not a major movie, but it's my favourite revenge movie, one that really hit me hard. I've seen it double digit times and the image I wanted was the protagonist (or should I say antagonist) in a gas mask, with his finger in the shush position.

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

That's the image. At first I thought about a silhouette of him with the axe, but after a while the gas mask seemed to fit better.

I love Paddy Considine in that.

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

I saw it without knowing anything about it and it blew me away. It's darkly funny, and escalates quickly.

Try not to read too much about it, just watch it. It's a Shane Meadows film and he's worthy.

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

I only saw it once at my brother in law's insistence. It felt like a homework assignment… therefore, I was already in a foul mood. I watched it, and to tell you the truth, I was reminded of The Beatles Yellow Submarine movie, which in my opinion, was better. I wish I had seen it in the 70s when I had been smoking pot. In that frame of mind, I may have given it the appreciation so many people think it deserves.

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

Maybe a part of it is all the hype. It's like ET. I remember going to see that at the theater when it came out. I had seen and heard so much about it before seeing it, so by that time, I wasn't impressed.

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

I'm just amazed at all of the hoopla about Avatar. I didn't realize that there was such a big to do.
This puts me in mind of The Exorcist when that was made. The book had already been a best seller, so when it was announced that a movie adaptation was in the works, there was a huge buzz. When it hit theaters, there were huge lines for blocks. There were also medical teams in the theaters because people were fainting.
Most of this is due to people working themselves up. One can actually make one's self sick with anticipation and an overactive imagination.
By the way, I did like The Exorcist. Hype or no hype, that was and still is a pretty good film, in my opinion.
I'm afraid I'm not obsessed with it though….

You must ask him about that. It's news to me. In the year I have been here, I think he has spoken to me about two or three times. Does that strike you as a torrid romance?

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

I can see where it would be disappointing after seeing the clips over the years.

an IMDb friend asked me to give it another chance and to watch it as the story of a man struggling with his faith rather than a horror….

I do have to say that it was good advice. Over the years, I grew to see it exactly that way. I think that is as it should be looked at.

I have not seen The Ninth Configuration. I will have to look that up and check it out. Is that recent, or am I just late to the table as usual?

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

Same thing. I actually couldn't make it through the whole thing because it was so dreadful.

I have absolutely no desire to ever even try to watch that movie again. I never understood what all the fuss was about.

Re: Is this how you really feel about a movie?

I hate that movie Avatar. I could write a negative review of it, but it just doesn't interest me enough to review. The blue cat people look idiotic. Maybe I just don't like having media try to cram it down my throat and tell me it's a good movie. The fact that there are desperate people who get depressed because they can't live in that world is depressing.

When I was young I was obsessed with Close Encounters (saw it many times at the cinema, got the soundtrack and a few books) but never to the point where it controlled my life.

That's obsession.

Just because you'd rather obsess about music, doesn't make movie fans any more weirder than you. The Monkees were an imitation of The Beetles anyway. You love second rate shit. I bet you love shopping in thrift stores and Goodwill.
