I haven't watched that many American films from 1970. The ones I did see, I suppose Woodstock was the one I enjoyed the most and it's not a favorite movie.

Re: Favorite Movies of 1970?

There were some good ones that year. Three rather off-beat or unusual films I really like from 1970:

Brewster McCloud

Catch-22

Little Big Man

And Brewster McCloud featured Bud Cort, who would go on to make another off-beat film the following year, Harold and Maude.

Re: Favorite Movies of 1970?

Hi, Zolotoy ~

Nice to see you here. As I said elsewhere, it's hard for me to wrangle the films I love the most from any given year. The only one of yours I saw was Little Big Man, which I enjoyed but didn't love enough to call a favorite. I think my choices would probably be:

Five Easy Pieces
The Garden of the Finzi-Contis
I Never Sang for My Father
The Conformist
The Ballad of Cable Hogue

Anyway, just wanted to say hi. I still think about our conversations about New England, and your pictures of Maine. I'm hoping to be heading that way sometime soon.

Re: Favorite Movies of 1970?

Hi, Spiderwort. Nice to bump into you here, too.

There were a lot of films from 1970 that I really enjoyed - I merely listed a few of the more off-beat ones that have stuck in my memory. But now that I think about it, 1970 was sort of a time when films were going in more unusual directions (the era that I guess you could call the Hippie Generation was still in progress, and I know some of that mentality made its way into the film making world).

Anyway, yes, there were some really good, and often off-beat or unusual, films from that year. Here's a bunch more I liked, or at least found pretty interesting:

They Call Me Trinity (spaghetti western)
There Was a Crooked Man
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
A Man Called Horse
Zabriskie Point
The Wild Child
The Ballad of Cable Hogue
The Cheyenne Social Club
I Never Sang For My Father
Patton
El Topo
Dodes'ka-Den
Tristana
Kelly's Heroes
Monte Walsh
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Two Mules for Sister Sara
M*A*S*H

*edit: I suppose I could list Five Easy Pieces, too, but I don't remember too much of that one. Probably need to see it again.

Re: Favorite Movies of 1970?

Oh, Zolotoy, you've got a much better memory than I do! How could I forget Dodes'ka-Den, M*A*S*H, The Wild Chid, and Patton, all films loved, especially Dodes'ka-Den. Thanks so much for the reminders.
