Brokeback Mountain : Is brokeback mountain

Is brokeback mountain

A man flick or chick flick?

Re: Is brokeback mountain

A gay flick. This is the movie that began Heath Ledgers descent into madness and depression. Jake was just too big.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

ouch

Re: Is brokeback mountain

It's a chick flick. I'm gay and even I thought it was overrated.

Would itty enjoy it with pop lol

Re: Is brokeback mountain

I think most ‘gay’ movies are terrible - I thought Brokeback Mountain was an okay film, but soooooo boring and I’d never watch it again.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

Yeah, it was a nice soap opera. And it did present a positive gay image and blasted stereotypes. But it never should have been nominated for best picture.

Oscars are all about politics

But funny to compare with Hollywood's attitudes in the 70s

Re: Is brokeback mountain

I really don't think Hollywood and television have changed that much. Look at Will & Grace. If those two faggots are not prancing stereotypes neither are the two mincers in that clip.

It shows a certain side to the gay lifestyle (and yes I consider 'gay' to be a lifestyle). The problem is they never show the rest of us normal guys who don't traipse around and scream.

So yeah, in that respect Brokeback was important.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

I've never seen Will & Grace, but yea, I know how the stereotypes that are often used in the media.

In 70s films, it was either a joke if guys were gay or the attitudes were derogatory.

It seemed like there were attempts to depict homosexuality in more realistic ways in the early 80s.

Cruising had stereotypes too, but it was the leather bar stereotype…and that film got a lot of backlash.

The one that comes to mind is, Making Love, which is very much like a soap opera for the big screen.

Then big studios didn't want to touch much on the subject since those films weren't making much money…so that subject drifted into TV movies, cable shows and Indie films for the most part

Re: Is brokeback mountain

Will & Grace has two main gay characters. One is an unabashed effeminate queen. They're not even trying to hide that he's a stereotype. He's a throwaway to real swishes who watch the show. The character Will is more masculine and I think they think (the producers) that he is not a demeaning stereotype. But in actuality from my view point, he most certainly is - shallow, obsessed with the good life (nice clothes, nice things), and snide and pretentious.

I've never seen the 80's Kate Jackson film, but I'll assume it was "made for tv". It looks like an honest attempt to show real gay men in a positive light.

When I admitted years ago on IMDb that I'm not out at work, I got the usual backlash from the message board basement dwellers that I was a hypocrite. This goes to the fact that real life in the 21st century still involves a professional closet for most gay men and lesbians. Yes, there is a minority who are out. But we still face a backlash, being passed over for promotion, not being respected as supervisors, being the subject of snide jokes behind our backs.

I hate this show:

Re: Is brokeback mountain

That's what I hated about American Idol - they would often have a gay stereotype that they'd make into the butt joke of the show…or it was someone over the top such as Clay Aiken or Adam Lambert, who are very much the stereotype that they'd overpraise.

That's something I'd get into debates about with Belize on the AI board on IMDb - she'd tell me that gays were all freaks, and if you didn't celebrate your inner freak, you were an Uncle Tom and were self-hating…lol

I tried to convince her that gay dudes are more like Kris Allen…the boring Christen singer and that's what more gay dudes would be attracted to, and she tried to claim anyone voting for him was a homophobe.
Then she argued with me that I wasn't gay…and she copy/pasted my posts and ran them thru some app that said I wrote like a female, and she kept insisting I wasn't really a guy…lol

I told her she was the biggest homophobe I ever encountered.

As for the film, Making Love, yea it was an R-rated movie that played in theaters.
The sex scenes are very tame though…most R-rated because of a couple F-words in there.
But very much like a made for TV movie.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

There's the rumor that Ryan Seacrest is gay as well. You know I live in LA. I can safely say the majority of male actors are queer. Theatrics is a profession which attracts gay males. They just marry women for cover for PR. Leading males depend on an adoring female audience. It's all about business.

I had the opposite problem on IMDb. Because I opposed gay marriage and talked about homosexual superiority, not victimhood, they would say I was a straight male troll.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

Yea, Ryan was always getting called gay…Simon Cowell was always kidding around with the gay jabs at him on the show. Many would say he's metrosexual…lol

Chelsea Handler threw in the Ryan being gay joke when interviewing Adam Lambert and Adam started laughing real hard.

The thing about gay marriage was another thing I debated with Belize…I didn't say I opposed it, but I said I wasn't fighting for it either. I didn't see it being a big deal, and probably most gay guys don't want to commit to a relationship for life anyway.

Then Belize sort of came to an agreement with me, after a good while of back and fourth banter, which was rare for her to agree with me on anything…in that she admitted she didn't really support marriage for heterosexuals either.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

The stereo types are because they're going for laughs

Re: Is brokeback mountain

and yes I consider 'gay' to be a lifestyle

It's a "lifestyle", how?

Re: Is brokeback mountain

If one has a same sex partner, it affects your life in every way and makes your life very different than that of a heterosexual. For a man, life without a woman is very different. For starters, no children.

I like to look at it like this: Homosexual is just sex. "Gay" is a whole social construct built up around homosexuality.

Personally, I find this to be an exaggerated statement. Yes, a homosexual relationship is different than a heterosexual relationship…but they're not galaxies apart. The union between the two partners - homosexual and heterosexual - is defined by the love, the support and the commitment they have for each other. Both can share that equally.

For starters, no children.

Having children is not a requirement in a heterosexual relationship/marriage and simply not wanting them is a right that any couple has.

Adoption, however, is always an option for those who can't procreate.

I like to look at it like this: Homosexual is just sex. "Gay" is a whole social construct built up around homosexuality.

Okay. I see what you're saying. Personally, I see it as this: Homosexual is the attraction/sex. "Gay" is just a modern-day synonym, not pertaining to any particular social constructs.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

I get your point. But it's still very different. And the biggest difference is that there will always be a gender disconnect between men and women. We males can never completely understand what it's like to be female. In a homosexual relationship, you're both guys and that gives that you a better understanding of each other, both physically and emotionally.

As for children, straight people know that children can be the outcome of their sexual relationship. And I've checked the stats. About 95% of married heterosexuals have biological children together. That's just isn't a factor with gay people.

Sure anyone can adopt. But most straights don't need to. And most gays don't want children.

Neither, it's a gay flick, and a pretty gross one.

😺 Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't. 🤨 Let's go, Brandon! 🤨 Try that in a small town.

Seriously? There was one sex scene between the two. One. The rest of it isn't anything that one wouldn't expect in a movie like this. My advice: pick a different genre if you're easily offended.

Re: Is brokeback mountain

As I just mentioned, pathetic!

Re: Is brokeback mountain

It's an LGBTQ+ film, so it's a different category. For anyone who wants to watch, however.
