Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
First guy is not a movie critic, so I don't think his review will count. Second guy is kind of one but he's more of a casual moviegoer who posts reviews on Youtube, like Chris Stuckmann or Jeremy Jahns. So, I'm not entirely sure that their reception of the movie will be the same as most professional movie critics. I promise you, if this get's a low score on Rotten Tomatoes, then it's pretty much a done deal.
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
First guy gets frequent access to press screenings and is usually spot on with his assessments. The other one has a pulse for analyzing films. No need to immediately dispute anything outside of game fans that appears positive. There aren't that many professional critics left today imo.
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Doesn't matter, the problem is that if it get's bashed by professional film critics then it will share the same fate as previous video game movies, the "curse" won't be broken. I mean, if that's the standard you want to set to call something the first "good video game movie" I can give you the names of quite a few that already did manage to gain audience, we want one that's a good film, not just a good video game movie.
I'm not dismissing these people, I want to wait and see if the reception of the movie is generally good, and at the moment, it seems like some people might have a problem with a "bland" plot and not much character development, and that's worrying.

Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
I see your point, but I have a hard time putting so much weight into one negative reaction from a critic. I'm not surprised by the criticism of it being dull, when that's an often slight against a director known for grimy and ugly social realist pieces (they've done well critically however). I'm not even aware if Simon or other bloggers share my taste. It's astonish how we rely so much on film bloggers to formulate our own opinions
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
The thing is, it's not just from one person, I've seen the same thing even from some fans, though fans will obviously be a lot less harsh on it if it does what they, the primary target audience, want from it. That guy doesn't seem to have anything against the director, as he said that he hasn't seem any other films from him.
Also, I don't rely on what critics say to form my own opinions, I actually liked Warcraft but I'm a fan of the games. I'm here because I want to see at least one video game movie generally considered good and appreciated by everyone. Plus, there's a regular poster here who used to troll the Warcraft board, though he claims that he wasn't trolling, who kept on starting threads on there saying that Warcraft would be destroyed by critics and that Assassin's Creed would be the first to break the video movie curse, so I'm also here to see if he was right.

Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Oh boy. This is shaping up to open to poor reviews. Do you have links to those?
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Never mind. I found the Tweets:

So far, I haven't seen a critic response that seems positive except for that J Don Dirnam guy. The others look negative.

Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
That's how I felt about the Warcraft movie, even after I saw it but it won't get a sequel if it loses money at the box office. While it might easily still get a decent opening, since Fox chose to end the embargo the day before it opened, poor reviews can quite easily kill it while good reviews good reviews are probably what's needed to get more people to go see it, other than just the fans of the game franchise, that is.

Plan 2 : "Why are people so damn upset over critic reviews?! Just enjoy the movie! " bye bye bye bye

Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
You serious? Read the replies to Kate Erbland's tweet and the responses, looks like she practically begged a friend not to pay money to go see it. She hates it. I haven't seen many tweets from movie critics yet that suggest they like it.
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Found this other tweet from Kate Erbland, looks like she went into this movie with low expectations in the first place:

Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Looks like she was against the concept from the onset, sad. I wish people could realize that actors find something special in a video game inspired project like AC. Predisposing them as base gets us nowhere
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
They have their expectations based on the past history of movies based on computer games. So, for them to change their minds, someone has to prove that a good movie can be made from them, unfortunately.
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Okay, I found this tweet from Keith Uhlich very very funny:

Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Who's Simon?
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Simon Abrams, he's a movie critic counted on Rotten Tomatoes and writes for RogerEbert.com and a few other places.
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
Ah ok, the name doesn't sound familiar or among the popular critics
Re: A few opinions after the NY Premiere
has pre-screening tweets said anything negative about any movie ever? no
