Bleed for This : Another damn boxing film?
Re: Another damn boxing film?
I think it's well-worn and doesn't need to be rehashed. This film looks like it offers nothing in the way of surprises.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
This movie will be more than just a boxing movie. It chronicles the life of Vinny and his spirit of never quitting. A true story about a man who defied the odds.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
This is the narrative of literally every boxing film.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
It goes far beyond boxing and I am sorry you feel this way. I urge you to see beyond the fact that Vinny was a boxer and see the story behind a man who wouldn't give up at life when he could have. I think stories about ppl who chose not to bow out in their life and choose to take the hard path and not the easy one is a great story that we need to see more examples of in cinema.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Right? I thought jasonfandrich was being sarcastic until I read his reply to you lol.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Defying odds? Yeah totally not like Southpaw, Almost every Rocky movie, The Fighter, or Cinderella Man right?
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Except all those are fantasy and this is actually real
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Actually those aren't all fantasy. Half of those were true stories. Or wait, were you joking? It's so hard to tell on here
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Cinderella Man and The fighter are based on true stories
Re: Another damn boxing film?
"As an MMA fan I think an MMA movie would sell better today than a boxing one."
Yeah, because Never Back Down proved that people will flock to see an MMA movie.

Warrior
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Warrior flopped too. Not sure if you were pointing that out or using it as a counterpoint.

It made a world wide box office of USD41 million which isn't so bad considering it cost 20 million to make (for whatever) reason. I had to look it up as I had never even heard about the film before.
Death is the standard breach for a complex prize.

I'm the other guy that saw Never Back Down and all two of us loved it!!
Re: Another damn boxing film?
as a boxing fan, I can't complain lol
don't like mma though
alright, alright, alright

alright, alright, alright
Re: Another damn boxing film?
As a fan of both sports I feel a Boxing film will always do better box office wise. MMA films most of the time have a B movie feel to them, think MMA doesn't have the mass appeal that Boxing does.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
And it's not as like ingrained into the social consciousness.
Non boxing fans can have an easier time relating to a boxing movie than an MMA movie I think.

Re: Another damn boxing film?
Mma did we not have them bad movies come out already ?
As for enough boxing movies and having enough i agree and disagree.
We have had enough boring predictable rocky films.
Yet when it comes to this and southpaw they are very different and have a new story.
Some people dont like these as they are not enough like rocky but thats the reason most others do

Re: Another damn boxing film?
Creed was a smash hit and Oscar nominee
Re: Another damn boxing film?
And it's funny because I don't think any of these boxing movies made big bucks in the last 10 years.

Creed made $173.6 million so that's certainly big bucks
Re: Another damn boxing film?
I bet $20 there will be a workout montage of him getting ready for a big fight

Re: Another damn boxing film?
MMA will never be as respected as boxing. In film or in the public eye. That much is obvious. Too much history and too many great underdog stories have been based on boxers. As another person here said, boxing is too ingrained in the public conciousness. An MMA story would be quite similar, actually, but at this point it would seem redundant. Basically you'd be talking about a boxing story with choke holds. I don't see an MMA movie succeeding way Rocky or Raging Bull did.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
"Rocky" was indeed a fantasy movie. It unintentionly gave weak men unrealistic motivation to act tough and nurture false ideas of thinking they are the greatest. I realize boxing movies generally are regarded as the "against all odds" variety of entertainment, but this particular movie unfortunately created artificial egos that are unwise and dangerous in "real" life situations. Rocky somehow "punked" many men into thinking they could pick fights with men much bigger and stronger than themselves only to walk away unscathed and more confident than ever. This was a disservice to the male viewer. Much like the Eminem movie "8 Mile" unjustly provided young men with wild ambitions of becoming invincible rap stars. Remember people, it's only a movie.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Rocky was loosely based on a true story of Chuck Wepner that went the distance against Ali when everyone expected Ali to end it early.

Re: Another damn boxing film?
Jesus, youre reaching just a tad there
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Wowyou kind of completely misunderstood Rocky. The sequels might be what you're describing, but the original Rocky was a love story with a boxing match as an afterthought. And it's message was winning isn't everything, sometimes it's the personal victories that count. If the movie inspired weak men to train hard, then that's a pretty damn important movie. Heck, I have better workouts after watching it.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
I find it kind of strange that so many boxing films are being made, mostly because the sport doesn't seem to be that popular/mainstream anymore. Personally I am a boxing fan, but whenever I mention boxing or the names of current fighters to people, they just kind of look at me strange, like 'wtf are you talking about?' I loved "Creed" and "Hands of Stone" is excellent, but I thought "Southpaw" was a complete piece of garbage. If it's done right, a film about boxing can be good. But making an "original" movie, that stands out from the rest isn't going to be easy, so maybe they should just stop trying.

Re: Another damn boxing film?
I hate football but you don't see me whining about it being on tv all the time. I do this thing called changing the channel or even more likely not watching the boob tube at all.
Re: Another damn boxing film?
Yeah, I feel like this is coming at the wrong time because we've already had quite a few of them already in the past 2 years a lone. This one could have been different because of the severity of the injury suffered by Paz but that part of the film surprisingly is only about a half hour of the film and theres no real close calls or dangerous stuff that makes you ever wonder whether he'll be anything else but ok in the end.
Trying to create a funny, engaging YouTube channel. If you guys check it out, hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

Re: Another damn boxing film?
This is just me, and I grew up with all the rockys in the 80s and going back to movies like raging bull and boxing movies still has that special kind of magic for me. I enjoy boxing more in movies than I do in real life. The thing is especially for my generation and the once before boxers have this magical thing about them, hearing stories about Ali, Marciano, Tyson and Holyfield made them seem so larger than life. I love Connor Macgregor but even he does not have the swagger that these guys have in the public eye yeah he is super famous but still not in the same league.
Its like superheroes in the 80s, everyone knew Superman, Batman, Wolverine, Hulk, Spiderman and F4. But only the true fans knew Iron man, wonder woman, avengers, justice league and say thor (im talking world basis here) Boxers are in the superman league while MMA will for a long time to come still only be in the iron man league, there are so many people around the world in different walks of life who will not know who Macgregor is, but EVERYONE will know Ali.
This is why boxing movies are still being made and still is making money.
When it comes to this one I loved it.
Yeah the story of the fight it self was pretty much same old same old but for me the meat of the movie was watching this guy go from a broken neck to pushing weights a couple of weeks later. I was on the edge of my seat every time he did something strenuous, I flinched when he bumped his head against the car roof. If you know anything about injuries like this you should be pretty tense while watching it.
Also the fact that teller was amazing in the role helped allot.
Great movie 7/10 Creed was better but they that's just the rocky fan in me.
Btw there has never been a bad rocky movie even if 1 and maybe 6 are the only great ones story wise.. But 4 might be my favorite 80s type movie ever Stallone, Weathers and Lundgren with a US v USSR story plus James Brown it doesn't get better than that.

Re: Another damn boxing film?
I totally agree. I think Here Comes The Boom was much more realistic too. That film really showed my what MMA is like in real life.
Warlock: What, like you're a big fan of the Fett?
McLane: No, I was always more of a Star Wars guy.
