Re: all-time terrible actress

You stating she is the all time worst actress tells me more about you than her. She is far from the worst, and if you knew anything at all about acting you would know that. The vast majority of people would agree that she is a very good looking lady. I would bet my bottom dollar that she looks way better than any woman you could ever have. Y5b4ou have shown yourself to be not only ignorant, but a
mean spirited, negative and hateful jerk. You've got a problem, see a shrink.

Re: all-time terrible actress

While she was not Meryl Streep (who is, though?), she had talent. She was good in "So Proudly We Hail," and "The Blue Dahlia." She had a presence that people responded to. Looks and talent alone don't always mean a person will be a success in films.

Life is short, there is time enough to be polite.

Re: all-time terrible actress

Still average-looking. That's the best you can come up with? Jesus.

Re: all-time terrible actress

Oh, I think she's exquisite.doll-like and perfect.

It's weird to know she was such a munchkin, though (4'11"). That's almost creepy. Edith Head said she was the smallest "normal" person she ever saw.

Re: all-time terrible actress

She looks a bit angry.like someone just woke her up.

Re: all-time terrible actress

I felt the same about Lana Turner until I saw her in "Peyton Place". Turns out she was a good actress, better than Joan Crawford IMHO.

Re: all-time terrible actress

Joan Crawford was too silly;b68 she was better suited for camp pictures and soap opera shows.

Lana Turner, a looker sure but an average actress.

Veronica was "chiseled" looking, a sharper Bacall, both growing more "handsome" than "beautiful" as they maturedbut Veronica's acting just wasn't there and no good roles seem to have been offered her.

Joan seems to have made a career for herself whether the public wanted her or not. A skilled politician but a nasty ratbag and only mediocre actress. Her looks, public-persona and fashion-sense is all she really offered the world. I think her best performance is in "Sudden Fea16d0r", not "Mildred Pierce" and several people have mentioned "Humoresque" as a great performance though I can't say I enjoyed the film.

Lana Turner was over-rated in the looks department and I believe it was her "figure" and tight sweaters that made her famous. She auditioned for "Gone With the Wind" and George Cukor found her lacking in depth, conviction, and understanding of Scarlett.

I recently watched "Peyton Place" because it has the same basic production cast as "Valley of the Dolls" and was absolutely floored when I found little soap opera campiness, the script gripping, the production and casting almost flawless, and Lana a real standout even though she wasn't particularly the main character of the film. Go figure!!!

Re: all-time terrible actress

This is an interesting article on how costume designer Edith Head dealt with Lake's (microscopic) height.

http://www.glamamor.com/2011/07/cinema-file-veronica-lake-plays-peek.html

It's interesting that Head emphasized Lake's bust whenever she couldVeronica Lake had large breasts, and playing them up somehow made her appear bigger overall : )

Edith's biggest challenge was her star's petite framesome sources say Veronica was only around 4'11". Edith made the actress seem much taller by almost always dressing her in floor-length garments and keeping details to a minimum. Sleek and simple. Those long gowns disguised yet another trick, which was putting Veronica in enormous platform heels to increase her height next to her leading men. Even Alan Ladd at only 5'6" was much taller than Veronica, and Joel McCrea was a giant next to her in Sullivan's Travels at 6'3". As a finishing touch to make Veronica seem more voluptuous and statuesque, Edith employed ruching along the bustlinea trick that she used with Grace Kelly's nightgown in Rear Window as well.

Re: all-time terrible actress

Actually, it was the fur coat that did the acting for Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce. Take that away, and she got nothing. In hindsight, her reputation was pretty much ruined by the tell-all book. It's extremely hard for me nowadays to separate her from Faye Dunaway's Mommie Dearest performance.

Camp or not, Peyton Place was actually dead-on when it came to the portrayal of the people with a small town mentality. Everybody played their parts perfectly well. It reminded me of All That Heaven Allows. Jane Wyman was more believable and prettier in it than the aforementioned females. Plus, she had a good acting talent.

Lana Turner was her most beautiful in The Postman Always Rings Twice, and she was never the same again. Acting-wise, she was frankly mediocre. She looked better in black and white than in color. But she did a good job in Peyton Place because she actually acted for a change.

Re: all-time terrible actress

Joan and Lana were considered competitors, though Joan considered her competitors Deborah Kerr and Bette Davis. Talk about ego! Kerr and Davis were miles ahead of both of them in the acting department.

Much as I recently enjoyed Lana in Peyton Place I'll never consider her one of the great ones or one of the great beauties. Veronica actually hat "it", my mom loves her, but the acting chops and depth were just not there. Same with Crawford though when she's in one of her starring roles, it's hard to watch anyone else when she's onscreen.

It's got to be nearly impossible to find someone beautiful that can act. Grace Kelly (can't) Elizabeth Taylor (can't really, got better). The closest to the beautiful that could act I would chose Vivien Leigh (at first), Ingrid Bergman, Catherine Deneuve, Julie Christie, and of course, Angelina Jolie (though she is looking peaked as of late and hasn't really taken on a really challenging role since Girl, Interrupted.

Jane Wymanehshe always looked ten years older than the role she's supposed to be playing and franklystupid in many of the roles I've seen her in.

But we all have our tastes. Nice talking with you.

Re: all-time terrible actress

I've said this before and will always say it again:

The trouble with most actresses is that they use their beauty to mask their lack of acting skills. That2000's why there aren't many good actresses in the history of motion pictures compared to the number of actors.

I consider Vivien Leigh at the top because she had theater training to begin with and she was believable when she played any character. Pus, she was beautiful.

Elizabeth Taylor is up there, and she knew how to be classy. Her finest hour is in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. She did a great job in Giant. She actually got better over time. Maybe it was the alcohol and drugs. Or she became very professional.

Grace Kelly was a great Hitchcock actress, that's all. A rare beauty although.

Ingrid Bergman was just an okay actress. I've always thought it was a hobby to her.

Deborah Kerr was totally average in everything.

Julie Christie can't really act. I've seen so many movies of hers, and I remain unimpressed, but she was great in Don't Look Now. I prefer Faye Dunaway.

Angelina Jolie is a terrible actress. She plays like a slut every single time, plus she was evidently high in some films including Girl, Interrupted. Her best role was in Gia.

Hilary Swank has her beat easily but looks like a kook. Plus Chlo Sevigny and Christina Ricci, both believed in the material, however indie they are, and gave their best.

Actually it was meeting Montgomery Clift. Liz said, in an interview, that his approach to the job of acting made her take acting more seriously than she had in the past.

Her work began to improve since then.
