They tried to make me eat things like oatmeal and farina, sweet potatoes and yams but I would stuff my cheeks with the stuff then cough it out into a napkin or run to the toilet to spit it out . I don't have children (never wanted them) but I think once a child agrees to taste something, they should not be forced to eat it if they don't like it. Some foods just don't agree with some people, it might be the smell, texture or taste but I don't believe in force feeding. That also goes for adults.

Ah, the old 'napkin trick', one of my signature moves for discarding the dreaded beets, lol!

My folks wouldn't fall for the ol' "may I be excused" trick ending with me running to the bathroom to empty my cheeks. It's a subtle art to be sure; takes years to master. Kudos, Cousin.

Who, among anybody, child or adult, is gonna eat something they don't like? Let 'em eat chicken nuggets instead of liver, and supply their iron, riboflavin, and other nutrients with gummy bear vitamins by telling them it's candy.

Hey Cousin: I guess I was lucky that I NEVER had to eat liver and onions, the old family doctor did not think organ meats were healthy so my mother never cooked them. Most of the stuff my mother made, I liked and I was a big veggie eater as a kid. She cooked every day and enough for lunches for the next day because she had to have meals for 8 people everyday, herself, husband , her father (my beloved Grandpa who I adored, we got into a lot of mischief together and the kids in the "hood" called him Genghis Khan) and 5 kids so it meant things likes roasts, huge amounts of fried chicken and pork chops and some Lithuanian dishes. I'm older than you so there were no Chicken nuggets in my day.

Same here, with beets as the one exception.

My parents were lenient. If I didn't want to eat something but was willing to substitute it with something else that was different but equally nutritious, they were okay with that. I don't recall being forced to eat much of anything. So, yeah, I don't even remember the last time I eat beets.

Fried eggs

Sweet potatoes, yams, and potato salad.

Hated these when I was a kid. I used to shovel it off the plate and into my hands, then show my parents the plate was clean (with my hands underneath the plate). Then I'd walk to the kitchen sink and rinse the food off my hands and down the drain.

A few months ago a friend of mine offered me one of their fries while out at a restaurant. I bit into it and immediately gagged, having no clue what just happened. Turns out they had sweet potato fries. My disdain for it hasn't changed at all over the years.

Now that was ingenious. Well done, my clever friend. And here I was thinking my old dinner roll trick was the height of ingenuity.

I used to hollow out dinner rolls with my tongue, and then subtlety blow the unwanted beets into them with my rolled up tongue.

Pretty much any 80's packaged crap that my mother tried to pass off as cooked meals.

I honestly don't recall a food that I was forced to eat that I wouldn't eat now as an adult. My mom had/still has an affinity for beets, but since my dad loathes them as much as I do, we were never forced to eat them. I remember eating liver and onions quite often as a child. My older brothers and I would smother them with whatever condiments were in the kitchen, sometimes it was ketchup or ranch dressing, but we ate it. I like liver once in a while these days (plain, sans the salad dressing), but if I want to eat it I have to order in a restaurant because Mr BF can't stand the smell of it cooking. He will indulge me once in a while and grab a small container of fried gizzards from the gas station because he knows how much I love them and how much I miss eating them (another one he can't stand the cooking smell.)

Liver. I can stand to eat most anything but that. I've even learned to make friends with Brussels Sprouts by roasting them. But liver is something I can't stand.

Can anyone remember the Mary Tyler Moore episode where she was taunting Lou Grant with how she'd had liver, all crispy on the outside and still pink on the inside, and he was almost salivating all over himself? I just stared and wondered when they'd lost their minds.

i agree about the stuffed peppers but i don't have as extreme a reaction to the taste or smell

i do not like the taste of peppers (especially green peppers) and beef, so no pepper steak for me either

Fresh homemade horseradish sauce, but now I like it on some things (at least a store-bought version).

Not really food, but there was a time in my childhood life that my parents had forced me to drink those nasty protein shakes that they made from the blender. yuk!
