Her character was Australian. That's why she had the accent. I'm pretty sure that is her real accent. Seth Rogen mentions it in the scene after they meet with the Dean of students. She didn't know what a Dean was and states that in Australia they are called Chancellors. It was a funny moment! Did you miss it?

She said she was an exchange student and he asked her to stay. The actress is Australian. She did play an American in Bridesmaids though.

That's because she didn't have a British accent to hide. She is Australian. They even mention in the film that she is from Australia. She spoke in her Australian accent throughout the entire film and never once tried to sound American.

Correction, she did try to sound American at one point in the film; when she was pretending to be Anne Hathaway on the phone. But she actually sounded good doing that impression.

Hilarious post. it's like you didn't watch the movie. It was mentioned several times that the character was from Australia. There was even dialogue about differences between Australian colleges and American.

Like everyones said that is her natural accent, she is Australian. She wasn't meant to be American. Anyway, the only thing I wanted to add on is to say she has an amazing American accent. See Bridesmaids.

Rose Byrne starred in several Australian films before heading overseas. Her accent is definitely Australian. If it sound somewhat British it is because the Australian accent stems from the London cockney accent.

We aren't all idiots in America, Aussie and British accents sound very different, if you listen. Like most non-Americans can only pick up a few different American dialects.

She explicitly states in the film that she would "move back to Australia" at one point albeit jokingly. But that's enough to imply she's from Australia.

Seriously, what movie were you watching? She never even attempted an American accent and they explicitly stated that the character (like the actress) was from Australia.
On the subject of her using an American accent which she *didn't do* in Neighbors, her American accent is acceptable in the films she's used it (Bridesmaids, X-Men, etc.). You can tell that she is either British/Irish/Scottish/Australian/South African/etc. but it's passable.
What always drove me crazy with her role in X-Men is that they hired an Australian actress to play an American character who was based on a Scottish character. I never saw the need to make the character American. Either they should have made her a Scottish scientist working for the American government, or they simply should have given the character a different name, since the character has absolutely no connection to the source material.

How did you REALIZE her character was an American. When she said she met her husband when she came to America From Australia to study abroad?!

Rose Byrne has played an American in several roles, Bridesmaids and X-Men First Class.
It was a decent American English accent. It was no Christian Bale American accent however.

you didnt watch this movie carefully, she already told from the start the she is from Australia. I dont even know that american have an accent, they just sound like general english for me. Oh, I forgot that they have this cowboy accent!

They mentioned she was Austrian a few times so she was trying to hide her Germanic accent but it wound up sounding almost like a person from New Zealand or somewhere near there. Weird.
