Too bad Nolan's story breaks down because of the temporal paradox he wrote for himself- it's the exact same paradox that makes the first "The Terminator" impossible.

Well, there are two possibilities- Human intervention, or extraterrestrial intervention. I've established that it is not possible for it to be humans so via Occam's Razor, it is aliens, but I missed this clue that you speak of.
