Americans don't seem overly concerned with open carry of handguns these days. Maybe that is a byproduct of these guys carrying rifles. Lawful concealed carry of course, is even less upsetting.

In most other countries, the fact someone walks down the street with a rifle means they get arrested. In USA they have to start shooting at people before they are arrested. You don't see the issue here? Open carry removes societies first line of defense against a nutter with a gun by letting EVERYONE carry a gun around openly. Actually "nutters" cannot legally possess a gun at all here, not to mention a long list of other citizens. The problem is that they and habitual criminals do not respect laws or the rights of others. "Nutters" should not be walking the streets, gun or no gun.

The other obvious problem with your thinking is that most criminals will NOT open carry regardless of the law. Generally, you would see their gun seconds before they use it, if that.

You'll be happy to know that concealed carry is becoming the more popular mode among the law abiding as well.

We had a thread on this shooting some time ago. Notice that the prior criminal walked into a Gander Mountain and submitted to a background check. Presumably, the database which should have included his criminal record was flawed and his sale was approved.

Also know that even if the BC had caught him committing this new crime, he would almost certainly NOT have been prosecuted. The percentage of such cases which are prosecuted is very small.

Typically though, criminals get their guns through the black market. Gun traffickers or by using their own straw buyers. A mess of felonies are committed in the process but you are correct, there are no background checks in the black market. Imposing them would be quite a trick really.

I stand by that and glad we agree. Criminals already break countless laws in obtaining guns. Despite a stack of gun laws which look like a NYC phone book, they easily get guns. It's because they could care less about your laws. Laws which are rarely enforced to begin with as in the case above.

Stick this in your brain. For someone or several someones who are willing to commit multiple felonies to illegally buy and sell guns, gun laws are barely an inconvenience. Existing gun laws or proposed gun laws. If you think you have a magic new gun law which will change that, let's hear it.

Who would know someone is a nutter walking around? One big indication would be if they are carrying an assault rifle. But here is the problem, until they start shooting they are doing nothing wrong in USAin other countries they are shut down just for displaying the gun in public.
