Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. : Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
But they don't care about the initial ratings.
They focus on DVR and Video on Demand ratings. (Live + 7 I think it's called.)
And they pay attention to the fanbase.
#AgentsofSHIELD was trending on Twitter last night.
I think the Marvel side of production is smart enough that the TV ratings system we have now is outdated.
Also, the other ABC shows don't do much better live, and they compare shows on the same network when considering cancellation.

Trending on twitter doesn't mean anything.
If I remember "Save Agent Carter" was trending on twitter too and nothing ever came of that.

But that was Agent Carter.
It was burdened by being a mini series.

Don't forget cord cutters. I don't have cable. I buy an iTunes season pass every year.
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
What does cord cutters have to do with it?
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
That the ratings system doesn't account for people who watch the show through other means. Myself I watch through iTunes. Some people watch through Amazon. Others watch on the ABC app. Nielsen doesn't monitor or account for these.
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Nielsen only monitors about 20,000 households in the US, so like 99.9% of viewers had no chance of being monitored in the first place. It has absolutely nothing to do with cable vs antenna.
If a current 'Nielsen Household' were to ditch live TV altogether, they'd get replaced right away.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
First off the purpose off the Nielsen's is to measure how many people watch the commercials. Total viewers only matter when used for PR spin.

That said if you watch via iTunes or Amazon not only do you matter to ABC but you are golden. You just don't show up in these progressively less meaningful Nielsen L+SD numbers but the network knows you are there and cherishes you!
As for those who watch on the ABC app the OP is right. You count for little since they can't sell the commercial time profitably on anything but broadcast. They don't give a damn how many people watch the show. All they care about is how many watch the commercials. The show is a bribe to get you to do that.
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
That said if you watch via iTunes or Amazon not only do you matter to ABC but you are golden.
Just to underscore this: iTunes/Amazon subscribers are paying for the episodes directly, putting cash in ABC's pocket in a way that's much easier to tally than ratings. You're literally voting with your dollars to keep the show on the air the same way you would when you see a movie at the theater.
If your theater is a space safe from ideas and opinions, you're doing theater wrong.
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
They really need to bring on another hero from another Marvel show; I know they are Netflix, but I would love for Luke Cage or Jessica Jones or Daredevil or The Punisher - JUST BRING someone in as a guest star - it could be Marvel hero from the movies to make a "special appearance", I think it would help the show a lot! I certainly don't want it canceled. I don't get why the ratings are so low, I guess people are just not happy w/the story lines, who knows?
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
they probably switched after that gratuitous 'daisy is the bestest hero ever' scene

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Let's face it: This LMD storyline can't hold a candle to Ghost Rider. They have also made it VERY clear where Shield is going: Director Daisy. I can see why some people would stop watching.
Enjoy Shield while you can.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Director Daisy is pulled straight from the comics of a comicbook show.Daisy/Quake is not made up for the show. The show was made for Daisy and a device to bring Colson back but she is the Superhero of the show.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
The comics don't mean anything unless they believably build it up and execute it well. Arrow proved this quite well by throwing crappy developments from the comics without the proper building blocks and expecting it to fly.
As she is right now, Daisy is the worst choice of the characters to become Director. If I recall, Fury took her under his wing to personally groom her in the comics. Unless I'm mistaken.
Someone needs to do that before she can even be a contender.
They all strive to deviate from the norm, but collectively swarm to be all the same.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
I don't understand why people still give the 'Ratings' any value. It's made up of less than 20k households in the US, out of an estimated 114-130 MILLION TV capable households. That's less than half of a percent of the actual TV viewing population, and they act like that's a reasonable margin
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.

Doesn't matter what people think. Brands care. Networds live and die by this measure. It's not perfect (it's awfully outdated) but it is what it is
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Back in the days of lesser technology that was true, it was understandable. But today it's not. Streaming numbers, for example, are actual tangible numbers; companies like Netflix and Hulu actually have to report the exact number of streams per title in order to payout the royalties.
Sure, you don't know who was in the room when it was streamed, but you still knowit was streamed 100% of the time. Not like the Nielsen way which gets like 0.016% of all potential broadcast viewers.
And a LOT of Networks have actually talked about paying more attention to streaming numbers and social media crap than 'Ratings'. ABC specifically has said in the past that the streaming numbers for AoS are very strong (just wish they'd actually say what they are).

And you also know that they did not watch any commercials. That's all that matters to the networks. The audience are not the customers, the advertisers are. The customers are what the networks are selling to the advertisers.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
But on live TV, the people watching the show are the same as the people watching the commercials, at least theoretically People who are not getting up to do something during the commercial breaks are not sitting there because they like the commercials; they are not getting up because they don't have to do something else. No one tunes into a show JUST to watch the commercials, minus weird events like when a world premier for an upcoming movie takes place during a show.
So my point is, if a show is being streamed by 5000 unique accounts each week, and that is 25% of all unique accounts, you can guess that 25% of the actual 'live' population is at least maybe watching live.
Few things to point out: A) I totally made up those numbers because I'm not going to go out and try and research how many people subscribe to say Hulu and how many people watch any given show on Hulu each week, if those numbers are even made public And B) the people who only watch streaming are people that are not part of the 'live' audience and therefore do not count as part of the 'live' audience numbers.
Having strong streaming numbers means the 'streamers' are watching a show, and since there currently is NO way to actually determine legitimate 'live' numbers it's at least something to go on.
Also, your comment:
That's not actually a totally true statement. In fact, it can be just the opposite in specific cases.
Many networks put their shows on their websites to stream for free, but you HAVE to watch a commercial first, so they would know you watched that commercial.
Hulu has a 'limited commercial' option, which their idea of 'limited' and my idea of 'limited' are completely different; 1 episode of an hour long (45 minutes) show can have anywhere from 2 to 6 commercials PER commercial break.
There are also some TV shows (AoS) that STILL force a few commercials when streaming even with the full paid accounts.
There are also other 'free' methods of watching TV shows and movies on demand that rely on commercials being played.
So while it's true that watching on Netflix or Amazon will have no commercials, or the correct shows on the more expensive Hulu plan, not ALL streaming situations will have no commercials.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
The networks do take into account the Live + 7 days numbers which includes streaming on the network sites (with commercials) and on-demand viewing which also includes commercials. The problem is these numbers almost never change anything.
After all the live + 7 numbers are in, shows usually fall exactly where they were in the same day numbers.
In other words if it was the 3rd most watched show on the same day, it is often the 3rd most watched show after all the live + 7 numbers are added in.
Networks make cancellation decisions based on how a show's ratings compares to other shows on the same network.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Where do you see the networks posting streaming numbers? Because if you're talking about the 'Nielsen' system, which does in fact track streaming and DVR +7 numbers, that's not a full picture; Nielsen only tracks the streaming and DVR numbers of the Nielsen Households, those select few hand chosen to be tracked.
If the networks are in fact posting actual streaming numbers in full, let me know where because I have yet to see that. All I have ever seen are the Nielsen numbers.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
On a side note. the nielsens track a higher percentage of people than most political polls do. Just an interesting fact.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
That's probably true, though I don't even have a guess as to how many people are tracked in political polls. I don't have an interest in politics. I'd gladly be a Nielsen Household, but I'd be utterly useless in a political poll lol.
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Actually, I thought I remember reading somewhere that AoS had the highest gains for streaming of any show in the 18-49 demo for their night. Something like 200% times the amount of live viewers watch online?
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Wrong, DVR watching varies all over the place. It's rarely useful for predictions outside of premiere week. This line of garbage is spouted by online web sites who are only relevant if the freely available L+SD numbers mean something. Which they don't. In any case the only numbers which matter are the C3's and C7's which are proprietary, and expensive, and which we almost never see.

It is an important consideration for shows on the borderline.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
I think deep down most of us while hopeful, see cancellation coming. The ratings are now lower than even Agent Carter was last season.

Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Exactly. L+ ratings DO NOT mean anything to ADVERTISERS who PAY the networks. It's the C numbers. Basically only c3, but the networks are working on getting it to c7.
"C3, which merely weight-averages minutes that contain commercials based on how many seconds of commercial time are contained in each minute, is not necessarily close to any individual commercial rating."

More proof that it is C3 and sometimes C7 ratings that matter, NEVER Live+3 or Live+7.

Those are great numbers for the CW and MTV

Even on CW those numbers will only give you 4 Seasons max due their Netflix deal. They're dead beyond that eg. Reign,Nikita, HOD etc.

I am glad this series is ending. The people got tired of this show's liberal agenda. Maybe next time tell your cast to stop posting dumb anti-trump messages on twitter. Enjoy your cancellation.
Re: Agents Of Shield Hits Massive Series Low In Ratings.
Bad news. I think this will be the final season of AoS, unfortunately. But the silver lining is, chances of Agents appearing in Infinity war will become more as the actors will be free to do their part.

Is ANYONE shocked by this news?
The slow death of this show has been confirmed for at least 2 seasons now.

I watch less and less TV. Mostly due to poor or agenda driven content. This show has pissed me off in the past but has really risen to a good level of quality recently. Will be sad if this goes away.

That timeslot is ratings poison.
They said that AOS would be darker, riskier, but it appears to be no different than the first 3 seasons.
I'm calling it.
The show will end this season. Daisy will be director and the agents will move on.
Whether any of them will appear in the films, well, that's most unlikely.
