Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens : Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

He is merely storing military rations in his gluteus maximum.

Edit: I produced a typo, but I will now roll with it. F-N certainly had a maximum maximus.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

One of the saddest bits was that he wasn't even given enough agency as a character to come up with his own name. A white character he just met had to name him like a freaking slave. *ugh*

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

1. Most of the "slaves" aka Storm Troopers were white.

Virtually every stormtrooper in the films has never been shown without a helmet so you're assumption of them mostly being white is baseless speculation. Regardless even if that were true it would be completely irrelevant anyway because the issue is of Finn and how his personal arc plays out and it plays out as him being the scared, bumbling escaped slave sidekick to his superior in every way white co stars (Rey, Poe, Han Solo).

3. He never once hits on Rey. He just quickly asks if she has a boyfriend.

Do you believe you have fair comprehension skills?

Finn asked Rey not to make small talk - find out her favorite color, and the names of her childhood pets, but to make sure he didn't have any serious competition. "Do you have a boyfriend? A CUTE boyfriend?" - who Finn felt he wouldn't be able to compete with.

It's a nod to Unforgivable - "I ain't tryin' to deal with no other *****!".

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Let's face it, he is a forgotten stand-in.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

So why would someone agree to play him huh?
How come Leslie Jones in the new ghostbusters plays the biggest loud woman stereotypebasically the only thing she can play?

HUH?? HUUUH????

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Finn is a racist creature?

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Finn is a racist creature?

It would certainly appear so. Have you not been paying attention? u007f

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Finn is a less overtly comicalu007f version of Jar Jar but with a bigger sidekick role & who gets his ass kicked/needs to be rescued more often.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Finn provided authentic comic relief. As do all the characters to varying degrees. It's been a part of Star Wars since Lucas first hired the Hyucks to write funny stuff like Solo dismissing and admonishing Luke, Leia insulting and haranguing both of them (like when Han blasts the door in the trash compactor) , and everyone bickering and offering backhanded compliments. It continued in Empire with Solo continually having his repairs to the falcon blow up in his face.

There is only one point of the film where Finn needs to be rescued and its Rey who got him into the trouble in the first place.

Umm did you actually watch the film?

1. He releases Poe because he needs a pilot so he can flee otherwise he isn't going anywhere. Even if you don't want to fully count this you still have.

2. Saved by Rey from stupid tentical monsters. That Rey accidentally released them in the first place is completely irrelevant & only adds to her Mary Sueness as it ultimately helped them and she quickly corrected her mistake, saving the ever hopeless Finn in the process

3. Saved by Han Solo from random shock banton wielding stormtrooper after soundly getting his ass kicked and was about to be killed.

4. Saved again By Rey from Kylo Ren after the later knocked Finn into a coma.

All Finn does throughout the film is play hapless second fiddle to everyone; Poe, Rey, & Han Solo because of his lack of skills & abilities.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Only one if those is a rescue.

Do you count when Ben talked Solo into hiding instead fighting when the Falcon got captured as a rescue? Or when Leia created the escape route when Solo got them trapped in the detention centre?

His knowledge of Starkiller made it possible for the Resistance to blow it up. His ability with gun controls and knowledge of tie fighters scanning capabilities were indispensable when helping Poe, Rey and BB-8 escape.

If Finn doesn't help Poe escape , if he doesn't recognise BB-8 , if he doesn't know alert Rey, if he doesn't how to elude tie fighters, if he doesn't know how to and volunteer to attack the oscillator , then Luke would not be found , the Resistance would be smoke and Rey would be dead or, at best, stuck on SKB.

The denial is strong with this one.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

So you do consider those examples to be rescues then.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Arbitrary and irrelevant along with your patently false assertion that Finn only gets saved/rescued once in the film.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

The black man hooked up with a white woman. Isn't that the ultimate symbol of black power? What more do you want?

Also, a woman defeated a white man. I swear to God, you PC A-holes are never satisfied. The more you get the more you want.

The black man hooked up with a white woman.

Umm no he didn't. While Finn was portrayed as desperately thirsting for Rey she showed no romantic interest in him as he got thoroughly friend zoned throughout the film with an exclamation point on it at the end in case there was any doubt.

Isn't that the ultimate symbol of black power?

WTF? Seriously? Only someone unequivocally racist and clueless would think such nonsense.

Also, a (white)woman defeated a white man. I swear to God, you PC A-holes are never satisfied. The more you get the more you want.

Yes the white girl power fantasy character Rey defeated Kylo Ren. You should take that up with white girl feminism & Kathleen Kennedy why we got such a crappy, heavy handed Mary Sue for a lead character.

Re: Finn is a racist caricature - debate

Finn essentially epitomizes the trope of the hyper tokenized negro character who gets lots of screen time but is ultimately a non threatening glorified tag along who, never does anything to take away the thunder of our competent white leads. The hyper competent (white) Mary Sue fanfic character Rey especially
