Roger Waters : Roger or David?

Roger or David?

I refuse to pick sides. I just wish they never had to split up, they both lost something.

"War, children, it's just a shot away."

Re: Roger or David?

true that the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts...

but let's see here...One still writes and tours, one does not...one has written a vast amount of new music and lyrics and even stepped foot into other genres, while the other has collected royalties, and substituted his girlfriend's loveletters for lyrics on his last album....

hmmm.....

at least we've seen a definitive asnwer to theold "Which One's Pink?" question...it's a tragedy that David got the rights to the name. Roger was the crux and creative genius of that band...he deserves all the credit in the world.

Re: Roger or David?

I'd definately have to say david, for a couple of reasons. His guitar work was what (in my opinion) really gave pink floyd it's definitive sound. He also carried this sound into the Division bell, which many seem to dislike for some reason.

The major reason that people say Roger moreso is because of the lyrics, and it is very true that roger was (and still is) very gifted at writing lyrics. But in my opinion music is about the sound and not the words, and Pink Floyd was all about that sound that they had.

Re: Roger or David?

Roger by far. Roger was also responsible for a lot of "the sound" as he co produced all the albums and did a lot of the tape effects and what not. "Amused to Death" is better than anything "Floyd" has done without him.

Re: Roger or David?

After Syd went crazy, Roger WAS Pink Floyd! Without him no one would know the name Pink Floyd today, and without him some of the best music ever created would not exist. so there. :)

Re: Roger or David?

^ Agree with above poster. Even though Roger is rumored to have a huge ego, the man was a genius.

I wish Syd would put out some more solo stuff but he's probably too busy gardening. Poor Syd. Such a shame.

Re: Roger or David?

Reading accounts of Syd's decline brings a tear to the eye, an absolute tragidy. To me Floyd have it all, sound and words. Dave's guitar work is amazing and in albums like The Wall it combines perfectly with Rogers writing genius. His lyrics, especially The Wall, are breath-taking, I have yet to hear an album so full of passion and emotion. It's difficult to take sides, they are like fire and ice.

Re: Roger or David?

/\ That is exactly how I feel about John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I don't really like Paul songs or Paul's solo work but together with Lennon they made a genius pair.

And agreed on Syd too. It's a crying shame. Another sad rock and roll story reminding everyone not to do drugs.

Re: Roger or David?

...or not as much as Syd did. It's amazing the man is still alive!

heavythumb, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Roger all the way.

Re: Roger or David?

Amen! Amen! Amen!

Gilmour would never sell a record if he did not have the name Pink Floyd to use. Waters went out on his own. Hell, Animals, Wall and Final Cut were almost Waters solo projects.

Re: Roger or David?

Well considering in 2002 Glimour put out David Gilmour:Live in Concert wich he didn't use the Pink Floyd name and that sold alot of copies, so obviously its not true that he would not sell anything wihtout 1c84 the name Pink Floyd.

Also Delicate Sounds of Thunder is imo the best concert ever done. Had nothing to do with Waters, besides the fact he wrote alot of the songs. Gilmour sings, and plays the sounds very well. He also produced everythign that had to do with it.

Also by calling him fat is off because in pink floyds prime he wasn't fat at all sh-t befor ehe joined Pink he was a model

Re: Roger or David?

Good evening Mr Vai

You have raised some really gopod points but tossing insults just doesnt cut it

Having been a PF fam for about 20 years of my life i have folloewd and studied the music and stories closely

It is true that the sum is much greater than the parts (sounds like a good concept album for Rog

One has to only listen to Blue light to see what a great songwriter and muscian Dave really is

Its time maybe that Rog get off his war kick and write something inspirational which we havent really heard since The wall yes there have been moments since (radio waves and the bravery of being out of range) but its still a bitch session

Yes Rog wrote alot of the greatest lyrics to ever have been heard but even he will admit he was the driver and Dave was the car he was driving

One only has to listen to Dogs or the pinnical of Animals being the gfinest guitar workj ever on the end of sheep

I guess i come from both camps in understanding the value of a great idea or story/concept as well as great musicianship and performace ability

On a final note how many have remembered the genius of Nick mason and Richard Write knowing there parts in one of the fu=inats bands in all exsistance

Re: Roger or David?

"One has to only listen to Blue light"

"Blue Light" is very good music, but...

"Another Brick in the Wall" Waters
"Money" Waters
"Sheep" Waters
"Brain Damage" Waters
"Hey You" Waters
"Welcome To The Machine" Waters
"Is There Anybody Out There?" Waters
"The Fletcher Memorial Home" Waters
"Have A Cigar" Waters
"Mother" Waters
"One Of My Turns" Waters
.
.
.

Roger Waters was/is Pink Floyd

Roger wrote the songs and was by far the most dominant force on their greatest efforts. David Gilmour is a fat studio musician that has brought nothing but disgrace on the name of the band with Division Bell and Momentary Lapse of Talent. This is not even a question. have you ever heard David talk? There is nothing there, nothing. Yes, he can play guitar, but not write.

Re: If anyone sucks its Roger.

"Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" was great. "Radio KAOS" was great. "Amused to Death" was good. The "division bell" and "momentary lapse" were the worst recordings I have ever heard. So, I disagree with you.

Re: Roger or David?

It was actually rumored for years and still is to this day, that Syd died!!! I mean come on, who do you think started this rumor. Obviously the band.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was written about Syd, who appeared in the studio one day while the band was putting the final touches on Wish You Were Here. Pink Floyd performed "Astronomy Domine" on their 1994 tour. Several biographies licensed by the band make mention of Syd's descent into dementia and the fact that he is very much alive. Members of the Floyd guested on Syd's two solo albums.

I don't know where you got this talk that Roger and David are triyng to make people believe that Syd Barrett's dead, but I think you're way off the mark.

Re: Roger or David?

They are a combination, Waters was the brains of Pink Floyd, I think he wrote pretty much all the lyrics for most of Floyd's albums, but I don't think he was really fit to be the leader of the band in the earlier days of Floyd, and remember Dave Gilm 5b4 our replaced Syd. Dave is an awesome guitarist, his guitar licks and voice made the band successful, I think Dave's voice is a lot better, even though I like Roger Waters vocals on The Wall, they aren't as hypnotic as Dave's. One isn't better than the other. They both have fairly succesful solo careers, but Dave is still more or less keeping Pink Floyd alive. Division Bell is a good album, but just a little too nineties, I was hoping it would be more progressive but its still good.

Re: THANK YOU!

I like them both and buy both of their solo albums. None of their solo work can compare to Pink Floyd, though. Together, they made magic.

I think they both contributed equally but in entirely *different* ways to Pink Floyd. Roger was clearly the lyrics/concepts genius, Gilmour the musical/composition master. Together they were much greater than apart. They are like two pieces of a puzzle, or like Yin/Yang.

Re: THANK YOU!

I love Waters, singing and writing, but I also love Gilmore singing and his guitar works... Together they complement each other and together they're perfect but if I had to choose between the two of them I'd have to go for Roger. I loved so much too see them together in Live 8! I wish they would get together again, but I doubt that will ever happen...

Re: THANK YOU!

David's singing rules, especially singing with Rick (like in the song 'Echoes').

Roger's lyrics, vision, and production are the best of all time.

As for the music, it takes all of them to make it work. Roger can write a hell of a riff, David can make it twice as good with his inventive guitar, and Rick and Nick fill in any voids and then some.

Collectively, the best ever.

Seperately, they are only as good as Floyd was with Syd. After Syd and before Roger left was the best band of all time.

And 'The Final Cut' is awesome! It was 'The Wall pt. 2'. If you love 'The Wall', you'll love 'The Final Cut'...just not one right after the other.

Roger by 10 miles!

If anyone is in doubt about the main man they should read the following article;
http://www.wicasta.com/pinkfloyd/penthouse1988.html

“Roger comes up with the concepts -- he's the preacher of the group and spends more time home writing with Pink Floyd in mind. I know what I give to our sound, and he knows it, too. It's not a question of him forcing his ideas on us. I get my ideas across as much as I want to. They would use more of my music if I wrote it.”
- David Gilmour, 1978

Re: Roger or David?

Definitely Roger Waters (yes, in my opinion).

Re: Roger or David?

Personally I prefer Roger for a couple of reasons. First, it seems to me from interviews I've read that David always tries to discredit Roger and say stuff like he doesn't like Dark Side of the Moon and he thinks The Wall was bad except for Comfortably Numb. But he still doesn't mi 2000 nd taking money for singing all of Dark Side of the Moon and the most famous Floyd songs, that were mostly written by Roger.
Second, the main reason I love Pink Floyd is the lyrics and the themes in their music. Unlike most people, I think The Final Cut (which was basically done by Roger on his own) is a fantastic album. I think Roger took over and did a fantastic job after Syd left and it kinda pisses me off how the other guys criticize him and say they don't think he was all that good. Also, I think he's a very good musician as well as a great lyricist.

That being said, I do like David very much, he's without a doubt an incredibly talented guy and I absolutely fell in love with him with the Live at Pompeii movie. It's really a shame that they can't work out their differences, because they really made a great team.

You and I and dominoes, time goes by...

Re: Roger or David?

--- it seems to me from interviews I've read that David always tries to discredit Roger and say stuff like he doesn't like Dark Side of the Moon and he thinks The Wall was bad except for Comfortably Numb---

And that's just like the beginning of Dave's comments putting down Roger, that's exactly what bothers me, when Dave goes on trying to convince the world he was the whole of Floyd, too bad he tries to convince them with "A Momentary Lapse...", or "Division Bell", his words don't match his work, he's a gifted guitar player though, but he can't create good music on his own.

Re: Roger or David?

I prefer Roger for all the reasons already stated.

Dave may have been a better singer/musician overall, but Roger's voice is definitly something special aswell. His sad/downtrodden voice is perfect for albums like Animals, The Wall etc.

Also, about solo albums, David's new album "On an Island" is one of the most boring albums I've ever heard (and I LOVED his other 2 albums) whereas Roger's albums are very interesting.

Re: Roger or David?

People often say Dave's voice was/is better, but i think they are just different, and even like Roger's dramatic singing style bette.
"On An Island" is so cheesy, "On A Mall" would be a better suited title.

Re: Roger or David?

its tough to decide. gilmour had the guitar. waters had the words. they both had the voice. i mean in the end, as a writer, i appreciate waters more, because of his meaningful lyrics. as a musician, i appreciate gilmour more, because of his incredible sound. damn it i cant choose!!
