When asked why only certain sensates participated in the orgy, J. Michael Straczynski clarified by saying, "Scene was about the eroticism of sex and exercise; the others weren't. And 9 am SF is 1 am Seoul, so Sun was asleep. Though Capheus did get a bit of a ripple effect watching the movie, he wasn't engaged in exercise so wasn't pulled in."
It makes sense, but anyway the second orgy scene is the best, the first was unnecessary and pointless(hot, but pointless), the second showed the sensates interacting and showed they were all bi like the Wachowskis said).

Also, the first time happened by accident while the all-inclusive one seemed more by design. In most of the first season, the individuals had to be under fairly extreme conditions in order to make contact. Now it seems that they're able to do so at will.

Lukey i feel the opposite. the first orgy (season 1) felt organic to me since what was happening to the character surprised them (and us as viewers). it was something that maybe had to have happen in season 1 to show the audience what can happen within a cluster (i guess it established the show's rules about what happens when several/all of the sensates are exercising or having sex).
in the Xmas special it felt completely forced and like it was trying desperately to be shockin.yet again. it was an unnecessary scene that took up screen time that could have/should have been spent on more important storyline stuff.
oh and the Xmas orgy scene was idiotic because of things like Nomi & Amanita (the same Nomi who has the Government imminently close to catching her) having sex right out in public on a hillside IN SAN FRANCISCO(!!) as well as the second, that's right the 2nd(!!) sleazy public restroom sex scene between Lito & Hernando. speaking as a gay man myself, it was irritating that the writers were so lazy as to just redo another bathroom sex scene between the couple.

The sensates initiate a "connection" whenever they share a common emotion.
Lito - seducing his boyfriend and lifting weights with him
Will - working out with his work partner
Nomi - having sex with Amanita
Wolfgang - fantasizing over Kala after seeing a naked Indian woman in the hot tub
All those activities involved the release of endorphins, which is why they made that "connection" for the orgy. The other sensates were too busy with other things and/or had their minds on other things.

He's a huge fan of Van Damme, so obviously the sight of his idol excites him, which means endorphinsand that's why we saw him "adjust" his groin after the orgy, even though he didn't fully take part in it.

yet in the Christmas special, they were ALL involved(which was pretty cool) with the nice blend of dark and light and dark colors moving around like a painting coming to life!
So, why were they in season 1? was it the actors doing or the producers not comfortable with them previously?
