Getting On : Koo Koo Ca Choo

Koo Koo Ca Choo

First let me say I loved this show. I fear it will fail because you have to pay too much attention to "get" it.
I have to point something out though. While it was kind of a good obscure joke only to be appreciated by people 50 or older, it was SO inaccurate I had to comment. When Laurie Metcalf said "Mrs. Robinson Koo Koo Ca Choo" and the other nurse "corrected" her and said "That's I am the Walrus", this joke has me totally confused. I got what they were going for, but I can not figure out who wrote this joke. If they were knowledgeable enough to craft this joke, how could they not know that in the song Mrs. Robinson they do say "Koo Koo Ca Choo Mrs. Robinson", making the correction somewhat silly.
Since Mrs. Robinson was released after I am the Walrus, I always thought it was an homage to the Beatles to slip that in.

Re: Koo Koo Ca Choo

I didn't get that either and it's been bugging me. And I'm not 50 or older ;)

Re: Koo Koo Ca Choo

I think the correction was meant to be funny, because of course she's wrong.

You don't need to be anywhere near 50 to be familiar with a couple of the most iconic songs of the last century.

I agree with MintBerryCrunch. I think it was supposed to be funny precisely because the correction was wrong. I've had that happen in real life, where someone feels the need to correct something I said (often smugly), but their "correction" is actually completely wrong. I'm also well under 50 but I got the reference.

I have also personally experienced this but mine wasn't a generational thing, just a kind of would-be snobbery on their part. On the show I think it was meant to show up the generational and class culture disconnection. At yet another more subtle level, it plays out the doctor's personality insecurities too that she accepts this false correction in stride.

Eeek!!! I'm getting dressed.

Re: Koo Koo Ca Choo

The joke was that the correction was wrong, and the correction was silly. Dawn is kind of an idiot.

One thing that (I guess) the OP missed, is that not only DO they say "Koo koo ca choo" in Mrs. Robinson, they DON'T say it in I Am the Walrus. The phrase in the Beatles song is "Goo goo ga joob." It really doesn't even sound as similar as it looks written down.

Re: Koo Koo Ca Choo

It made me laugh cause a friend and I had a disagreement about "Koo koo.." being in Mrs. Robinson. She argued it was from I am the Walrus. I told her it was also in Mrs. Robinson

Re: Koo Koo Ca Choo versus Goo goo g' joob
