Very well deserved.

I agree he deserved the Oscar.
I didn't watch the ceremony unfortunately but I did recently see Whiplash. I hated Russell Fletcher as a character and just wanted to jump into the movie and put his ass on a plate. But J.K. Simmons was terrific playing the ruthless, sadistic music teacher. I'm happy he won the Oscar because when an actor plays a part so well to where you despise his/her character as a whole, then you know the actor has done their job. I also find it refreshing to see interviews where J.K. Simmons seems like a decent guy off screen.
But then again, what he does for a living, I know - it's acting.
