Ann Savage : Her TREMENDOUS performance in 'Detour' (1945)

Her TREMENDOUS performance in 'Detour' (1945)

Don't you think that she gave one of the GREATEST performances of all time in Detour? The first time I saw that wonderful movie, I really couldn't help to keep that stunning femme-fatale in my mind. I really never saw another Ann Savage movie, but I feel she was a TERRIFIC actress.

By the way, is she still alive?

WOW! You're so lucky! The lady is not only one of the greatest vamps of the '40s, but also a true film-noir legend!

Did you write her again, I mean, recently? How is she now? Where she lives? Does she have a family? I always was very curious about the real Ann Savage. Her stunning "Vera" got me soooo thrilled!

Thanks for writing.

Fran.-

Ann Savage is sooo COOL!!!

A very nice lady, without a doubt! So, she still appears in festivals? WOW! Obviously she still is SO COOL! I really would like to see her in person for saying her how much I love her! But, sadly, I live too far from you all…

Thank you so much again!

Re: Yes, I do.

You're welcome! It was truly my pleasure to express my admiration about this AWESOME lady, starting this humble thread.

To be honest, I don't know so much about her (just saw Miss Savage in "Detour", and in no other movie else), but watching her in it, I've realized she is just FASCINATING. Without a doubt, in "Detour", she offered one the greatest female performances of all time (I would say, at the same level of Barbara Stanwyck, who -for me- epitomized the film noir's femme-fatale in "Double Indemnity". I believe Miss Savage did the same, as well!).

I agree: she was very beautiful and an amazing actress. I really would like to know -and watch- much more about her. She's such a living legend!

I hope she's still having a good time, and that God always blesses her.

Re: What a great post !

I agree Ann Savage is a wonderful actress and gives one of the greatest film noir performances in DETOUR.

I wrote her about 3 or 4 years ago and sent her some stills to sign but unfortunately I never heard from her. So I don't know if she no longer signs or what.

She was far more beautiful than she is in DETOUR, that was a cheapie film and they didn't try to make her attractive, probably the opposite. I have some other gorgeous stills of her. She is also profiled in the book DARK CITY DAMES with has some nice pictures of her.

Barbara + Ann

In fact, I prefer Ann. The late great Ms Stanwyck was a powerful actress but I never found her all the attractive physically, expecially in "Double Indemnity", where they had her wearing that silly wig!

You're right. I mean, I've never considered Barbara as "beautiful", but as a fabulous actress. Let me tell you I'm all the time having fights with EVERYBODY because they always say: "Sure, your Bette was a pretty good actress, but you can't deny she was ugly…". (You can't imagine how much that pisses me off! For me, she was so gorgeous, obviously, in a very peculiar-unconventional way) But anyone say NEVER anything about Barbara, who, even about conventional standards, was much more unattractive than Miss Davis! You're the first one agreeing with me!

Just like you said, I just can't find Ms. Stanwyck as attractive either, but there it is where her power was: She was capable for you to believe she was indeed! It probably has to do with the attitude, the personality, the talent, the acting… To be honest, she's not into my actresses top ten, because I've never found her as charismatic. But I must recognize she was a tremendous actress.

But our Ann certainly was talented and so hot! As I told you, I've never seen her in other movie, but in "Detour", and I still consider she was pretty sexy in it! Not like the "girl next door", but as "the VAMP next door" https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/data.filmboards/images/emoticons/wink.GIF" alt="wink.gif">

Thanks for writing again!

Best wishes!

Re: Another great post, Fran !

In SATAN'S CRADLE, Ann Savage plays a Vera-type who now runs a town with her murderous henchmen. If Al hadn't killed Vera, who knows what she might've done with the loot from Haskell's father's estate!

Re: Barbara + Ann

It's down to personal taste, but I'm surprised to read that you find Sanwyck so unattractive - I find her extremely sexy. An odd face, but her body was TIGHT, and, to paraphrase James Gleason, "a pair of the greatest legs" of all time!

I also find Bette Davis attractive - sexy in some things, but rarely unattractive in her early days.

Re: Her TREMENDOUS performance in 'Detour' (1945)

I am just watching DETOUR now and I am literally BLOWN AWAY by Ann Savage!!

This is proof positive that Hollywood awards are literally games of politics, influence and other "intrigue".

Yeah, I completely agree. She definitely was a talent to be reckoned with. I'll be looking out for more of her films.

I want to go back and take her first venomus spiel from the car and record it as my ring tone for my phone.

I couldn't agree with you more. Her performance was so strong, powerful and realistic,5b4 absolutely ahead of its time… I just can't understand why she didn't become a superstar.

Re: Her TREMENDOUS performance in 'Detour' (1945)

She was outstanding in Detour, and I can't wait to see more of her work. I always think the best acting I ever saw was the star of Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc, but this is right up there IMHO.

I couldn't agree more. Ann's performance also ranks very high among my favorite performances ever. She was superb in it.
