Politics : Great news! Students wear white pins to remind them of white privilege

Students at Elizabethtown College this month are wearing white pins in the shape of puzzle pieces to remind them of their white privilege.

The campaign was launched over the weekend by the Elizabethtown College Democrats, who say it aims to make students at the small and private liberal arts college in Pennsylvania more introspective about issues of race, especially in their predominantly white region of Lancaster County.

Discussions about race are often perceived as being only open to people of color, but I think it is just as important for white people to partake in conversations about race, Aileen Ida, president of the College Democrats, told The College Fix via email.

Ida said white people are continually allowing for a societal system of oppression to occur unless they work against it. The white puzzle piece pin represents racial struggles of all sorts.

No matter how accepting someone is, that doesnt stop them from being part of a system based on centuries of inequality, she said, adding the campaign transcends politics.

This patronising, condescending gesture BS annoys me.

If privileged white people want to acknowledge and do something about their inherent privilege a damn pin isn't going to make things better. What will improve matters is for them to move into black neighbourhoods when they finally get a new home, or ensure that they make their existing neighbourhoods as open and accessible to black people as possible. Sending their kids to mixed schools, so preferably public rather than private schools, and non-exclusive colleges, and ensuring opening access to professional positions at work, will do a lot more for black people than a frickin badge.

But like a typical rich white lib, these people want to ease their guilt and feel like heroes, whilst living in exclusively white communities, sending their kids to exclusively white schools and colleges, working in exclusively white professions, and mixing with exclusively white social groups.

I live in the UK, but I have always attended mixed comprehensive schools and colleges, and lived in mixed neighbourhoods. My neighbours have been a mix of white, black, and Indian/Pakistan. Unfortunately, my professional is dominated by white upper-middle-class types, rather than people from ethnic minority and working-class backgrounds. That said, I've had various black and other ethnic minority bosses.

I never said my profession was all white. And bear in mind that some of my past jobs were in positions outside my current profession. But the UK legal sector is predominantly white and upper-class, particularly in higher positions.

As for the second point, can you advise me why I've supposedly contradicted myself?

what would you say the % mix is ?

I don't have the figures offhand. They exist but I'm too lazy to do a search on my tablet at the moment. But from personal experience I'd say that most top legal professions (i.e. barristers, judges, and corporate solicitors) are 90% upper-middle-class white. The other 10% is made up of people from working-class and/or ethnic minority backgrounds.

It would never see the light of day, but I was thinking of making an independent movie called "White Privilege." I'd send two WASPY kids, a boy and a girl, to a primarily black High School, in a poor area, and film what happens to them over a semester with a fish eye camera.

I'm not sure, but it was a different story at the predominately white college(s) I went to. The black college students segregated themselves, had scowls on their faces all the time, and had an especially big chip on their shoulders. In high school, they were the clear majority (easily over 90%), and I was not mistreated, nor did I witness any mistreatment.
