Strange? Well French and English are the recognized Canadian languages. It, French is the official language of Quebec and, I think, New Brunswick. Plus Trudeaux's first language was French. There was a number of French speakers among the Press.
It did make Trump look sort of left out. Maybe a little rude to some, but, hey, what's French without some rudeness?

Trudeau continued his point from English into French randomly, and Trump and most of the people in front was not wearing an earpiece (according to comments on twitter).

After all these years, why are there so many Canadians who can't or won't learn each other's language? Is it stubbornness or stupidity?

Yes, but if you know English you should speak English. For instance, The Norwegian PM wouldn't speak Norwegian during a joint press conference with the american president just because he knows the language, he would speak English because he and everybody else in the room would understand English.

Watch Obama's press conferences with Merkel. Not all foreign leaders like to speak English with the American presidents, especially if they feel like they can express themselves better in their first language and own media.

Not all foreign leaders like to speak English with the American presidents, especially if they feel like they can express themselves better in their first language and own media.
Good point, but Trudeau seems to be a supreme English speaker.

Is it such a chore or insult to hear another language and its translation?
You put it terms of courtesy, so why not be courteous to our visitors and help them be comfortable?
Americans have a very tight and narrow comfort zone..And world view.
Believe it or not but some of us enjoy hearing other languages And even attempt to speak them. Spanish speaking and Deutsch sprechers are always kind and helpful with my attempts.

Are you sure about that? Even if that is true, I strongly disagree. The CEO of a Norwegian company, yes, sure, by all means speak English - but the Prime Minister of Norway should speak Norwegian. He shouldn't speak a foreign language while representing Norway.

That's a bit like asking why Frenchmen in France don't learn English and Englishmen in England don't learn French; it's because they live in different language communities and don't get enough exposure to other languages to become fluent.
Italian-speaking immigrants to the United States in the past managed to assimilate and speak English, and Spanish-speaking immigrants should do the same.

I know Americans who lived for a time in Quebec, and they were met with incredible hostility when they spoke English (despite it being one of the official languages of Canada). There is even a law in Quebec that bans signs in English.
Even if many of the readers are capable of understanding English, all of his readers will speak French, so it makes sense for him to want French quotes.
In the particular case of Trudeau, a major part of his base is in French-speaking Canada, so it is good politics for him to pander to French speakers.

Of course, the Liberals get votes from English Canada too, but their actual base is Quebec.
It is somewhat similar to the Labour party in Britain, which has its base in Scotland.
In both cases, they are now being challenged by newer parties in their heartlands: the Bloc Quebecois in Quebec and the Scottish National Party in Scotland.
The Liberal party's equivalent of the DNC in the States fairly openly recruits people to lead their party. Both the current Trudeau and his father were recruited.
It is somewhat similar to the Labour party in Britain, which has its base in Scotland.

Americans aren't the only people on the planet. There are also Canadians, and I would guess the meeting would have been broadcast to Canada where Trudeau would be expected to speak in both French and English.

Harper, who had a strong English accent when speaking French, also switched between English and French during press conferences abroad. I am not sure what is the point, and I am a strong supporter of the French language in Canada.
