The moment it went off the rails…. SPOILERS

I was all set to be somewhat impressed with this movie. From the start the cinematography was very competently executed. Most of the performances were straightforward and even believable. I even appreciated the dialogue, which for me is often one of the weak points of a low budget feature. It was all going quite well.

And then...

In the department store, for some odd reason, Esther does not approach Melanie when she sees her walking by. Instead she chooses to spy on here. It didn't make sense. Unless I missed something. But that wasn't a deal-breaker. The idea that this woman had a living child finally drew us into the intrigue of the story.

But then...

the scene where the Esther is "abducted" from the kitchen and appears in an intentionally blurred frame doing it doggy style.

Cut to her and her lesbian lover enjoying a cigarette in bed. It was all downhill from there.

And then...

The drowning/shotgunning scene in the bathroom - in slow motion! Holy crap!

This movie failed on story - pure and simple.

I give full props to the director for creating a movie that in all other regards was not only watchable, but I dare say, was well crafted. But the story was just garbage. Too bad.

I feel just the opposite.

Funny you say the cinematography is competent - the first thing I noticed in the opening scene was how poorly and distractingly bad the lighting was. There's medical equipment along the back wall and it's throwing shadows everywhere, from all angles. Then, the actors move to the right, to a different part of the room, and it's like nothing's lit at all (because it probably wasn't - the whole lighting rig was being used in the beginning of the scene)! Amusingly amateurish.
