IMDb recently decided to shut down its long-running discussion board because some films received racially aggravated comments.

The movie database company posted on its website stating how IMDbs message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience.

The decision gained traction after racist comments were made on the IMDb discussion page for Raoul Pecks Oscar-nominated documentary, I Am Not Your Negro.

The films message board sparked an array of racially abusive comments from both white and black IMDb members, and Twitter users.

One titled discussion read: Disturbed by the level of racism on here, while another said: Its Official Blacks Ruin Everything.

So there you have it. Because of some racist comments on the "I Am Not Your Negro" board, they are closing all the boards permanently.

Many new indi filmmamers and hardworking teams have been hurt by this. No one can even ask a serious question in some show forums without trolls answering new watchers and turning them away with false info, or derailing threads, etc.

So if they used a word search and count program on the above terms, and given the fact that Liberals accused anybody disagreeing with Obama a racist, no wonder this occurred. So that means that because the Left's abuse of these terms is what's causing the shutdown. But you still have to wonder why the came to this "decision" only after Hillary lost.

Makes sense to me. On some boards, I would see obvious racism in topic titles that were several days old. I didn't go crazy with the report feature, but if I didn't tag it, no one else would. I'm not sad to see this place go, and I fear for wherever some of these creeps end up next.

My guess is the Bezos finally took a look at what he purchased. If you were $72 billion rich and saw this sh*thole, wouldn't you shut it down also ?

There is a lot of ignorance on display on IMDB boards in the form of racism and trolling. IMDB should have addressed it by deleting accounts. Instead, they gave us an ignore feature.

IMDb also refused the idea of volunteer moderators (a practice which has worked in other places).

Someone monitors the volunteers to make sure that they aren't being unfair and keeps them if all is well. It works.

Sadly even the moderators that already exists are unfair themselves.

The problem with the ignore button is that you are the only one who knows which member is on ignore or not.

Hardly surprising as both 'sides' have been predictably blaming each other for the boards' demise ever since the announcement so naturally our leftwing chums would eagerly cite waycism and all the usual favourites as the primary cause!

That said, I still believe the real reason for our impending demise is that IMDB is likely the social-media derived mainstream site still boasting light, unobtrusive moderation. That's both a curse and a blessing of course but it does undeniably enable discussions and debates on contentious topics that are largely uncensored and of which elsewhere would be tightly controlled.

It also means though that last year's Ghostbusters travesty (for example) and its very 'f^ck you' feminist pretensions were riotously ridiculed thoroughly over at the Fembusters board, mostly unimpeded. By contrast discussion on it via other sites would've invariably been policed thoroughly, limiting the justifiable negativity it incurred. Now I'm not suggesting that Fembusters 'lively' IMDB board single handedly sunk the film, but it likely contributed to its box-office failure. To what degree though is impossible to quantify.

That's a supreme inconvenience for IMDB's parent retail company and indeed their corporate chums at Sony of whom naturally wanted to make as much money from the film as possible before all the (deserved) negativity engulfed it

Regardless, post Trump victory there feels a very broad clampdown across the internet of unwanted or else quasi 'seditious' opinions of which are typically (and deliberately) mis-categorised more often than not as 'hate speech', 'fake news', 'alt right' et al to legitimise their suppression. Worrying times.

This is not some grand, fiendishly coordinated conspiracy though just a load of stiflingly powerful corporations with detrimental pretensions of faux 'progressiveness' all on the same wavelength with regards to dealing with opinions they don't like.

All that said though I'm not particularly devastated about IMDB's demise, more philosophical and broadly reticent about it and to a moderate extent (and for reasons not alluded to above) tacitly supportive of it's closure.
