Politics : Pruitt Confirmed: Good News for No-one
Re: Pruitt Confirmed: Good News for No-one
I'm not cheering about it. The long term AGW effects will be coming home to roost but given China and India, whatever the US did or didn't do, which would be mostly just talk at best if Clinton had been elected, wouldn't matter much anyway. The more immediate concern is local caveat emptor in the US be careful where you live, where you get your water and air. Avoid living near fracking, industrial areas or any of the other toxic manifestations of the coming deregulated health and safety codes.

Yup, there's a reason why he was one of, if not the, most controversial of Trump's picks. Boggles the mind really.

I agree, I can't defend it. Clean air and water, and the right NOT to develop cancer or die from industrial toxins introduced into your habitat "Stringfellow" are fundamental rights, and not "political". Literally, matters of life and premature death.

China has signed the Paris Agreement with its own reduction regime. US CO2 emissions are still 3 times Chinas and 12 times as much as India per capita. The only reason Chinas actual reductions are anywhere near Americas is because its population is three times Americas and its drive to create a middle class before they all revolt thinking they can reach Americas consumerist paradise without pain.

However, despite the strong denier lobby in the US and Trumps declarations, America has been reducing its emissions thanks partly to Obamas policies and especially California..

You've stated facts. Nothing to disagree with. The US does leave the per capita worst environmental footprint on the planet.
Long before the Chinese reach that goal to live like and leave the footprint of the average American, we will all have died of asphyxiation, starvation, drowning or cancer. The reality of poisoning the environment is not political it's a physical fact.

Eddie,
What difference does a job make when you're dying of cancer?
http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-fracking-20150211-story.html#page=1
Course now the EPA is gonna be fine with eliminating all standards for oil field waste water injection and airborn carcinogens. Worrying about that or regulating basic water and air quality is about as ridiculous as trying to save some small spotted tadpole in Oregon, amirite?

What difference does a job make when you're dying of cancer?
Helping to better understand the health effects of oil fracking, the state in 2013 ordered oil companies to test the chemical-laden waste water extracted from wells.
Data culled from the first year of those tests found significant concentrations of the human carcinogen benzene in this so-called "flowback fluid." In some cases, the fracking waste liquid, which is frequently reinjected into groundwater, contained benzene levels thousands of times greater than state and federal agencies consider safe.
The testing results from hundreds of wells showed, on average, benzene levels 700 times higher than federal standards allow, according to a Times analysis of the state data.
The presence of benzene in fracking waste water is raising alarm over potential public health dangers amid admissions by state oil and gas regulators that California for years inadvertently allowed companies to inject fracking flowback water into protected aquifers containing drinking water.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency called the state's errors "shocking." The agency's regional director said that California's oil field waste water injection program has been mismanaged and does not comply with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.

Re: Pruitt Confirmed: Good News for No-one
Coming at this from a slightly different direction, why do we need an EPA to address this?
Criminal offenses such as negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, third degree murder, criminal conspiracy, etc. all existed long before the EPA. Why couldn't the legal investigative arm of the federal government that already exists, the FBI, investigate and prosecute such offenses?
The EPA isn't necessary, is my argument. It's just another bloated bureaucracy that wastes tax dollars, employs thousands of unnecessary bureaucrats, and in many cases abuses its power and swamps businesses big and small with niggling, punitive, excessive regulations that are often motivated much more by politics than any concern for protecting the environment.
Just like you folks, I'm all for clean air and water, and for punishing those who carelessly and callously pollute them. I just don't see why we need an EPA to do that.
Pre-emptively heading off what I see as the most likely rebuttal, that many environmental issues are incredibly complex and require specialized knowledge that no FBI agent could reasonably be expected to have, I counter with the suggestion that private sector specialists could be hired on a case-by-case basis to help with the investigation and prosecution.
Doing this would not only create private sector job demand, but would ultimately be much less expensive to the tax payer than perpetually funding a constantly running, ever-expanding government bureaucracy.
Thoughts?
Peace.
That had not occurred to us, Dude.

It'll still be there, as a sub agency of Exxon Mobil. BUt, you're on your own as far as protecting yourself from all the environmental toxins that are going to be pumped with no restriction into the air, soil and water.

Hell, maybe we can bring back DDT. Who needs fncking non-carcinogenic air, soil or water? That crap is highly over-rated. It's perfectly safe to spray your vegetable garden with Round Up by Monsanto.

Re: Pruitt Confirmed: Good News for No-one
I don't think so, man. Economic forces are too powerful. Environment will lose out to making a corporate profit every time. Just try to live in a place that's rural, never had any factories around it, probably near the coast. Don't put yourself in the position of being a victim of premature death and illness due to living in a toxic environment.

With Mr Pruitt in place, it's likely that President Trump will rapidly push ahead with orders to overturn Obama's Clean Power Plan and his "Waters of the US" rule, something conservatives also see as an over-extension of federal power.
The one good thing to come out of this disastrous appointment. The 'Waters of the US' rule is flawed and needs to be rewritten with more input from those of us in the agriculture industry. Ditches are not 'navigable waterways' and should not fall under the Clean Water Act.
