Sadly, has I don't think we will ever get rid of it in my lifetime. Each side uses it to their advantage and they'd rather take their chances than depend on a popular vote. The wealth and power is of those two parties define politics and policy in the US.

I think it will take a major disaster like war on our soil to create a true will for change. The 'haves' are too deeply entrenched and aren't looking to share. Look I was actually a Bernie supporter even though I knew if elected he would NEVER get his policies passed but I could get behind his philosophy. Hillary? Luke warm on her but I do believe she would have been a better choice for the democrats and Green Party folks.
