I have heard the bottoms of these bigger ships can go very deephundreds of feet! This can cause the displaced water to rise up (the place it took up in the ocean is now gone) and spill up over the sides of the ship!
All too often, this ends in tragedy.

Depends on if you want to be Officer or rating. Ratings can be achieved with some short courses. My Officer Certificate of Competency took 3 years.
Quality if life varies massively depending on the ship and the crew. I have had some of the best and worst experiences of my life at sea.
